  1. Indian food is hard to make spectacular – but it's also hard to screw up.

    Not spectacular but not screwed up:
    The chana saag wasn't as pulverized as the usual slurry. But it was bland, and barely spiced at all.

    Not spectacular and slightly screwed up:
    The Hyderabadi biryani tasted no better than halal cart biryani (and on occasion, I've liked the mobile version more). The too-soggy basmati rice also came with an overwhelming amount of very tiny pre-frozen clams, squid, oysters, etc. I felt like I was eating plankton.

    Not spectacular and entirely screwed up:
    The small, dry, tough naan had bits of plaster/terracotta on it!! What the heck?? I'm not sure if their tandoor chipped, or if they retrieved the naan off a very dirty broken floor. Nor do I care. Ugh!

    The one good thing about Saffron is that their portions were far larger than other Indian delivery spots'. If you're into chowing down on inedible pieces of ceramic AND stretching that into lunch the next day, give them a try!

    For Indian in the area, I'm sticking with Masala (yelp.com/biz/masala-indi…).

  2. I cannot say enough good things about Saffron Garden.  The food and service is top notch.  I bring all of my friends and family that enjoy Indian food or are willing to try it out to Saffron Garden and order takeout just about every other week.  

    My favorite entrees here are the chicken tikka masala and chicken xacutti which are both tender, creamy and full of spices although not too spicy.  Chicken Xacutti has a hint of coconut and i LOVE just about anything coconut.  The seafood appetizers were a hit when i brought my family here – there are two in particular that i cannot recall the names of but are lobster and prawns sautéed with onions and peppers.   For dessert, the rice pudding (which i always have) is extremely aromatic and tasty and it is topped off with fresh coconut shavings (YES), a sweet mango sauce and a cherry.

    Upon my first visit to Saffron Garden, the service was extremely attentive and made me feel right at home.  The people here are humble, constantly say thank you and make you want to come back with their kindness and hospitality.

  3. Came here on a visit to my friend who lives in the area. We walked her dog with us and sat outside with the dog. We opted to start with a vegetable samosa and took our time ordering.

    I ended up getting the chicken Kalimirch and I was very happy with it. I regret not ordering a side of naan to go with it. It was the right amount of spice I was looking for, and mixed with the rice really filled me up.

    The service in the beginning of the meal was really good, but towards the end, it was pretty slow and we asked the waiter 3 times for the check before he brought it out to us. Should be noted we were the only ones at the restaurant for quite some time.

  4. Here's a place I want to like but it keeps letting me down.

    The food is decent but I've had service problems.

    The first time I ordered here, I enjoyed my meal but they forgot something. Had to walk back and have them fix it.

    Ordered from here this weekend, I had another issue with the order. I felt like the girl that took my order was a bit out of it. I gave her my phone number and when she read it back to me, it was a completely different number?? That's when I got worried. I repeated my order, walked over to pick it up and double checked and as I suspected, they forgot something again.

    Each time, the owner has come out and apologized and was very nice and made things right. But I don't feel like dealing with his staff's screw-ups anymore.

    The last meal wasn't as good as the first time anyway. The shrimp tasted a bit off and too soft. Also, FYI, the fried potatoes are just French Fries!

    Otherwise fair prices, good menu with a lot of vegetarian options. I haven't eaten in but the restaurant looks cute.

  5. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon and the entire place was empty. If you're Desi, don't come here. The food is taylored to the non-desi pallet. It tastes nothing like the traditional flavors we're used to. Everything was bland and weirdly sweet. The chicken was dry, and overcooked. The swag tasted like I'd rather buy canned saag, because it tasted better than this stuff. The biryaani, nope it wasn't biryaani. The  two stars are for the spectacular service. Please step up on your food.

  6. This is our go-to Indian restaurant! Love the flavors, and the dinner special (appetizer + entree + naan + rice) cannot be beat. Always very kind and friendly service, and the take out is very prompt.

  7. I'm glad I saw Alyce W's review before ordering from here, because I knew not to expect standard Indian fare. The flavors from Saffron Garden are definitely subtle and delicate, and nothing I had tasted like the Indian food I've had elsewhere.

    The brown sauce that goes over the samosas had hints of cinnamon and apple, and was sweeter than I'm used to. So while I was clearly eating vegetables it also sort of reminded me of apple pie!

    The sauteed mushroom appetizer wasn't what I was expecting, with flavors that I wasn't able to identify. While I didn't dislike it it's not something I'd order again. The lamb boti kebab however was downright inedible. It was so overcooked that I couldn't even get through one of the pieces with a serrated knife. I wanted to get a sense of the flavor of the dish though (because it did smell absolutely amazing), and did try a bite, and if it hadn't been turned into rock I would have really enjoyed it. Though they were just two pieces, not a kebab.

    The Shrimp Subji Entrée with mushrooms tasted very similiar to the Ginger Chicken. The chicken tikka masala had the tenderest chicken I've ever had in the dish. But for all three the flavors were extremely subdued. Do not come here to get the heavily spiced Indian food you're used to, they're doing something very different.

    I would like to try some of their other dishes because their menu is so unique, they have lots of things I've never seen or heard of before. But as of now the only thing I'd get again are the samosas. There's a good chance the flavors here are just TOO subtle for me to really enjoy.

    Also, their menu says they're gluten free.

  8. Even though the menu had an impressive list of things I never heard of, I went with an old standby, the lamb vindaloo. This was a bold dish, on the high side of the spice scale. I also enjoyed coconut soup, another spicy offering. As a first-timer, I couldn't tell you if the free rice pudding is an everyday occurrence but I liked it.
