Souen Restaurant

“I'm a vegetarian that knows nothing about Macrobiotics but this spot is an Epic WIn.”

  1. Not my cup of tea. The food is too bland for my taste – even dishes with all ingredients that I love.

  2. Souen is a good option in NYC for macrobiotic food.  This location lacks ambiance but the food is fine.   I love the udon, macro plate and the futumaki roles.  A good option in a healthy eater likes fish, since they have both vegan and fish options.

  3. I wanted one last vegan something before we disembarked from NYC and Souen had the fortune of being within walking distance of our hotel.  I placed a pick up order for the broiled tempeh teriyaki sandwich, although the fatty in me truly wanted the deep-fried tempeh option.  Effort towards being a "healthy adult" =  bummer.

The sandwich was indeed massive, layered with fresh greens, tomatoes, sprouts and a smattering of pickle chips so the side.  The generous slabs of tempeh were pretty plainly broiled, just as the name would suggest, with a hearty smear of teriyaki-like sauce.  It didn't boast the best taste or consistency (that tempeh funk was pretty noticeable), but hey y'all learn from my mistake, order the tempeh deep-fried, pay the consequences later.  Your tastebuds and tummy will thank you.

Also, I ate half my sandwich almost immediately after retrieving it, but it had already started to morph into a soggy heap of substance formerly known as bread.  I think the pickle juices had seeped into the bread almost immediately, bummer.  It wasn't an offensively bad sandwich, not at all, but if I could do it all over again . . . probably would have ordered something else for my NYC departure meal.

  4. Nice healthy macrobiotic restaurant which is mostly vegan, with some fish dishes offered. Cuisine is Japanese food.

Every souen has a slightly different menu. This one in soho has a variety of appetizers, entrees, sushi and desserts. No Ramen (east village location has a Ramen menu).

I enjoyed the steamed dumplings (really tiny though), curry vegetables with brown maze rice (loved this) and shared a pumpkin coconut cake for dessert. Everything was nice and light! Nothing was too salty or greasy or sweet.

There are daily specials too so look out for that. Gluten free items are clearly marked.

Service was great and attentive.  The ambience was really peaceful & zen. I felt that I had a very mindful meal at souen.

Definitely a place for healthy, macrobiotic vegan food that does not rely on salt, oil or grease to dress up the food.

  5. The vegetable curry. Do it. Just do it.

  6. I really love this place – my go to when I'm in need of healthy comfort food. The only thing is that the portions are not superfilling for the price, but the quality and flavor is fantastic.

  7. Okay, got converted to this place. A $15 meal in New York that feeds your stomach and is healthy and serves organic wine (aka alcohol) is a place to go. Soho location is also far better, bit disappointed with their curry but this is not a curry place so why would you order curry. This is also not a seafood specialty restaurant so why would you order seafood. Pesto dishes are yum.

    Also, maze salmon rice- ace.

Pps- should've known the steamed cod was extremely blend..

  8. this place is super healthy and won't make you feel like crap after you've eaten. the price is definitely on the higher end for meals that don't have meat. but they have pretty good fish and the quality of their ingredients are good! they promote themselves as being macrobiotic, organic and natural. checks everything for 'pay lots of money!' but i got my meal for free so no complaints there 🙂
