  1. What do you do when it's 11:30 on a Sunday night and you're ravenously hungry?  Go to Spa, of course!  A huge selection of food, considerate staff, and realistic prices.

I had spaghetti with sauce and I was iffy about the choice but my stomach was gravitating towards it for some reason.  The pasta was overcooked but the sauce really wasn't bad.  Yes I did put a lot of grated cheese but yes I am Italian so it was going to happen either way.  I was still hungry and ordered fries.  They were just right.

My DC had the chicken salad club sandwich and liked his fries as well.  He only ate a bit of the sandwich but took the rest home.  All in all, I was so happy that we went here, especially because our server didn't really judge me for ordering more food hah.   (I didn't eat dinner…and barely ate lunch…so I was trying to make up for that)

Overcooked pasta or not, reliable restaurants are extremely important.  I would definitely go back and I'm glad to know they'll be open when we need them!

  2. A very acceptable diner.  Decor is dated but servers are fine, food comes out fast.  I stopped by for breakfast – usual eggs, bacon, home fries, toast, coffee.  Price was OK at $6.00.  Did not notice a TV.  Did not check for WI-fi.

  3. This hole in the wall greasy spoon could be so much better. Located next to bar row, a stone's throw from the Hoboken train station, it's puzzling that it's just not that good.

My grilled chicken wrap was gnarley. Chicken was clearly beyond frozen at one point. I asked for bacon, no bacon. But, kudos for being open late. This spot definitely fills that void in Hoboken when everything else is closed and some drunk munchies take over your will power. My friend's grilled cheese looked bangin'! So stick with the most indulgent items and you'll be good.

The server was kind of rude and this place isn't that cheap. I mean $6-$7 for a disgusting wrap no fries is pretty pricy.

Regardless, I'm sure Spa has saved many a hungry people at one time or another, but its more of a last reserve for me.

  4. Now the Spa is another one of those Jersey greasy spoon diners–minus all the glitz and tack. It's straightforward–lunch counter, a few tables and a few booths, ATM, and a dessert/pastry display case, and a HUGE menu. Boom. Diner.

Despite the menu's vastness, I go to the Spa for one thing and one thing only. A Reuben Deluxe. A good old greasy Reuben and fries. It may shock you, but the Spa, this tiny hole in the wall diner, has my favorite Reuben, EVER. And when I want a Reuben, it's the only one I really want. I crave it to the point where I walk across town to get it. Something about the corn beef (I never order pastrami) they use which is more delicious than any I have encountered (out) yet. It is moister, more flavorful, more delicious, more addictive. The bread to sauerkraut to meat to cheese ratio is perfect, allowing the tongue to taste all three–the buttery crunchy bread, the tangy sauerkraut, and the salty corned beef. The Thousand Island dressing comes on the side at request so you can put on as much as you like. This Reuben is served closed, rather than open face, which I prefer, so its like a stuffed grilled cheese sandwich.

Not only is the sandwich always delicious, the fries are always hot and golden. The service is prompt, sparse and friendly. I can't wait till my next trip.

  5. This is a pretty unremarkable diner-like restaurant located on a busy street in Hoboken.

I didn't feel like this was a very friendly place.  I noticed that the person who appeared to be a manager type was pretty robustly greeting many of the customers who walked in the door. I didn't receive such a greeting.  In fact the only encounter I had with him was when I asked for a receipt which he disapprovingly provided and the receipt had the date 1-23-00 on it.

The person that took my order was the person who was working the flat top cooking. I had two eggs over easy, bacon, toast and home fries along with some coffee and water. The bacon strips were deep-fried and not to my liking. The eggs were very good and the rye toast Lightly buttered was good. The home fries so-so.  The coffee was so-so.  I had to go without sweetener because the only choices were equal and sweet n low and I don't like either. I asked for Splenda. I was told they had none.

They didn't have Splenda at the start of my meal but when a young white woman with blue eyes and blonde hair, who came in about 20 minutes after me asked the same waiter for Splenda, he promptly left out of the restaurants' front door and returned in a few moments with a box of Splenda and gave it to that customer. I watched the whole encounter in disbelief.

He then reached across me and placed a couple packets in the sugar dish on my table.  And he didn't say a word to me.  Not even excuse me. Not even, did you want some now Miss? It made me wonder why he didn't take the initiative to do that when I asked for the Splenda before the blonde?

I was not happy with the customer service I received at all.

The one star is for the properly cooked over easy eggs and for the courteous treatment of the Latino men who were working and cooking on the flattop, but not permitted to open the cash register to handle the money. The two manager types were rude and unfriendly. I regret spending money there. It felt like a throwback to not so good days.

  6. So I heard that the management is new. There are some new faces, yes, but Spa still deliver exactly what you want from this kind of place.
Food is very good and the price is very, very competitive. Staff very nice.
…and a lick of fresh paint on the walls.
I up my rating 1 star.

  7. I've been here about a million times. It's right next to the PATH, I live mere blocks away, I mean, there really isn't any other option for me at 3 in the morning.

Never had issues with service. They're quick, come right to you, grab your order, don't mess it up and get what you needed. They're oddly quick. Like, I can't even comprehend how quick they manage to cook this stuff sometimes. It's your typical greasy spoon diner – your stomach will probably be upset hours after your meal. You know what you're getting yourself into.

I always come here for breakfast. Even if it's 8 at night, I come here for breakfast. I mean, I love breakfast, who doesn't? If you're a breakfast man like me, you'll find yourself coming here often if you live in the area.

  8. This place isn't terrible, but I can't say I've ever been to a worse diner.

Having gone a handful of times for either late-night or early-morning meals they were all average to below-average but never awful.

What I find funny is that they call themselves 'spa restaurant and coffee house'  the coffee is classic watery diner coffee.

I live downtown so this is sometimes the only option, but I like Malibu better uptown.
