  1. We ordered from sweet potatoes last minute for an easter dinner that nobody felt like cooking. My girlfriend and I had a craving for chicken and waffles, but did not want to travel too far. This seemed reasonable since it was down the street from her mothers house. Now, as for the food, it was mixed. The fried chicken was good. Breading was nicely seasoned, chicken was done right, not too greasy or dry. Mac n cheese was good but not great. Potato salad was very good. I will give it to them on the cornbread though, it was phenomenal. My girlfriends mother liked the fish very much as well. As for the deserts, the apple cobbler was bland but the banana pudding was delicious.

The service is where they lost their points.

My order was 70 bucks. Not saying it's a large scale catering order, but 70 dollars is decent business. When I called up to let them know that they forgot the syrup for the waffles and if they could kindly deliver it ( down the street mind you) I was put on hold for about 10 minutes while the girl who answered the phone tried to figure out a solution. She was extremely nice and offered a free desert, but I told her this would not help the problem at hand. She told me there wasn't any way she could send a delivery driver out due to them being really busy. Having worked in enough restaurants and food establishments I know that this would not cut it. I was pissed off, but discovered that banana pudding on waffles is a great substitute. I considered it a win none the less.  I would return, but certainly would double check the bag before I left.

Also, space is extremely small so I would suggest take-out.

  2. I've been walking past this restaurant every week for the past year but never had the "courage" to walk in. This place is situated just below the train tracks on north avenue. Parking is a challenge but manageable if you're from around the area.

We had an order of jerk buffalo wings, they were delicious but they weren't real jerk wings. They were deep fried wings covered in a delicious jerk sauce. A bit salty but I like them this way.

For the entree, we had the salmon and the braised short ribs. Both of these entrees were delicious but the salmon was one of the best I've ever had! My wife had the ribs and I couldn't stop picking at them. Every entree will include two sides, we tried the spinach, string beans, sweet potato fries and the yellow rice. All of these items were great but the sweet potato fries were indeed the most memorable. They're slightly glazed and aren't dripping in oil as you'd expect. Everyone seemed to be ordering dessert but we didn't have any room left.

This is a small restaurant, I wouldn't recommend it for large groups unless you're doing take out. This restaurant does not serve alcohol either.  Next time I come here, I'm going to dodge the appetizer and go straight to the entree so I could try dessert.

  3. In my newly adopted quest to eat my way down North Avenue in New Rochelle I've quickly discovered there are so many gems that need to be yelped about. Sweet Potatoes certainly makes that list.

After reading some of the reviews and checking out the tantalizing photo's posted here I convinced my friend we should check this place out for lunch today. She's been living in this area for years and did not know about this place. She was about to be put onto one of the best meals of her life by a girl from Queens who doesn't really know the first thing about Westchester.

The fact that the place is small and that there's no really flair to the ambiance and decor are quickly forgotten the moment that you food is delivered and you take that first bite of heaven. There is a reason they call this comfort food!

Our waitress Ashley made out visit here quite enjoyable. That's the positive thing about smaller restaurants in most cases. You really get that special attention that you won't get at a large dining hall. Ashley explained the menu, specials, made recommendations, waitresses all around could certainly take a note or two from this girl. She deserves much praise for being friendly and attentive and it was really our pleasure to be served by her.

As we checked out the menu we really wanted to order one of everything but she made sure to bring us our drinks (homemade sweet tea, and a half lemonade half tea for my friend) and a starter salad that we were not even expecting. To my delight the house salad was perfect. The flavors all complimented each other. There was baby spinach, mixed greens, tangerines, green apple, cranberries, crumbled tortilla chips for a little crunch and a smidge of bleu cheese paired with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing.

My best friend and I ordered the same thing which happens so frequently and is one of the many reasons we are best friends. We had the Seafood Lover's Delight which comes with a choice of three of their seafood menu options as well as two sides. Regretfully I will tell you that the portion size is easily enough for three people, and I say regretfully because I really hope that they don't read this and make it smaller. I chose the catfish, shrimp, and crab cakes with mac & cheese and candied yams as my sides. She had the whiting, catfish, and shrimp with sweet potato fries, and mac & cheese as her sides. We also ordered cornbread for the table and an order of boneless fried chicken strips with herb fries to go for later.

Everything was delicious and I can't say there was anything I didn't like. The fish was very fresh, cooked, seasoned perfectly, and topped with a slice of lime. I prefer lemon because the lime is a little more on the bitter side but not enough to change my mind about this fantastic spot I just discovered. The yams were tender and tasty. The mac and cheese was oh so cheesy and you can tell they use a blend of several types of cheeses. It was not dry, crunchy, or bland in the slightest. No morsel was spared of this gooey side. The shrimp were jumbo sized and the breading was crunchy and salty and to me that's not a bad thing. We got some chipotle and tartar sauces which were both great at enhancing the flavors further. The crabcakes were a bit on the sweet side and I never tried them prepared this way before but I liked it. They were also twice the size of any crabcakes I've ever had anywhere else. This place definitely does not skimp on quality or quantity which is major because a lot of places will fall short in one or another.

I tried my friends whiting and sweet potato fries as she nibbled on some of my crab cakes. The sweet potato fries are covered in a brown sugar glaze and possibly some roasted garlic. The refills of our tea's were free and Ashley even offered us a to go cup for the road. Major brownie point yet again. As she checked on us we were sure to tell her how much we were enjoying the meal and she shared some more information about the restaurant with us. Apparently they also own a larger space at the other end of the block used for their peak times and Sunday brunches. She explained that the brunches are every Sunday from 1-5pm and run $21.50 per person and it's an all you can eat buffet of a rotation of most of their menu items. She also said that two Sundays out of most month they also have a Jazz brunch. Not really my cup of tea but after this meal I'd check it out anyway. The laid back R&B they played at the restaurant as we ate definitely helped us mellow out after the holiday season.

The desserts looked great and they offered a nice variety but sadly we were way to full from our gigantic platters and still had much food to bring home for later. Five stars for this place, no doubt about it! I want to shout it from the rooftops. We will be back for sure and if the owner is reading this, Ashley deserves a massive promotion for being one of the most courteous waitresses I've encountered. I'd write more but I've reached yelps limit

  4. Adorable little gem.  Two parts to the place – a small dining area and then a larger room for weekend/bigger occasions.  Nice decor, tranquil atmosphere.  The food was pretty good:  complimentary salad with greens, cranberries, cheese, and raspberry vinaigrette – I'd suggest using arugula instead, mixed greens leave it lacking a certain … umph (but that's just me).  We ordered fried chicken with potato salad and collard greens, and braised beef short ribs with mac-n-cheese and string beans.  I love, love, loooove the greens! So very good – not too salty, perfectly done.  The potato salad was pretty good too, as was the mac-n-cheese (really cheesy, just the way I like 'em).  String beans were fine.  The ribs – yummy flavors, sweet and tangy; while they looked like they were just falling off the bone , they were just a little dry on the inside – that was a little bit disappointing.  The fried chicken was also well done but also just a bit too dry on the inside.  One thing I completely did not like – dessert.  We got apple cobbler for dessert – it came cold and was just really kind of not tasty, entirely too sweet,  sticky, and well .. cold! I'd suggest doing it hot with a scoop of ice cream but something not very sweet so it may balance out the sweetness of the cobbler itself.  Overall, not a bad experience.

  5. Came in wth my boyfriend last night. I already knew the food would be good, as we've taken out before. It was good to have the dining in experience. First off, it's tiny. I mean teeny tiny. 4 tables tiny. Apparently there is a larger space a few doors down.

I had the crab cakes, which were delicious and the BF had the short ribs with collards and mac and cheese. I tasted his and it was also really good. Since the quarters are so close I got a good look at the catfish— next time I'm getting that. It looked amazing. We also each ordered the lemonade–way too sweet for my taste I also thought it lacking in lemon flavor.

The service was friendly enough, though a bit spotty and amateurish. What I thought was great was someone else complained about his collards, the gentleman serving him apologized and offered him an alternate side. That's good customer service.

Alas, we were too full for dessert, but I'd love to try the peach cobbler on our next visit.

  6. Didn't realize there were two separate areas to this restaurant. There's the take out section, which has about four tables and then there's the restaurant side, which was closed Friday afternoon, which has over six tables or so.

As for the food, it was great. Ordered the combination plate, catfish and short ribs of beef, plus candied yams and Mac and cheese….all very delicious. We will definitely be back to order out.

One other note, the young guy at the counter was very polite and attentive.

  7. Had one of the best meals I've ever enjoyed at Sweet Potatoes.  Ordered the Rosemary chicken, Mac and cheese with collards.  They were nice enough to give me chicken wings only my favorite part of birds.  The chicken was drunk with a savory Rosemary flavor.  It was fall off the bone tender and very moist right to the bone.  Equally as excellent were the sides.  The Mac and cheese was full of rich cheesy flavor and real cheddar was used in the sauce.  Collards were cooked perfectly, tender with bite and not mushy.  My partner ordered the whiting and it was expertly fried and not greasy.  The herb fries that accompanied the fish were tasty.  The salads that came with our meals were just ok but the peach cobbler is excellent.  As others have noted the restaurant space is tiny.

  8. Review for Sunday Brunch:
Decent. Not amazing. Very limited selection & small for a "buffet" style.
$21 pp buffet consists of: No whole fried chicken! Only wings & drumsticks. That's just lame to me. Chicken & penne pasta, candied yams (delish), scrambled eggs, pre made French toast, Turkey hot dogs cut down the middle (NOT turkey sausage as we were told over the phone), fried catfish tenders (good), Mac & cheese, excellent salad w baby greens, fresh pineapple, cranberries, & blue cheese, very moist corn bread. Unlimited lemonade, sweet tea & water for $2.50 extra.
The atmosphere is upbeat, a mix of soul, hip hop & jazz music, comfortable seating. Fun for groups.

    Review for lunch:
Solid soul food, not wholly southern food. Priced a la carte for lunch so it can get pricey.
Excellent fried catfish & shrimp- good crunch, nicely seasoned, tender fish & the shrimp were perfectly cooked. The house salad was comprised of tender mixed baby greens, blackberries, grapes, cherry tomatoes, orange sections & a sweet house made vinaigrette  – so fresh & full of  flavor.
Loved the candied yams. The sauce was a bit overwhelming but sweet and buttery.
Fried chicken was moist, not overly seasoned but nice golden crispiness. Not the best I've had to be sure, but it was good.
The collard greens are amazing! Perfectly cooked, not overly done. Made w smoked turkey leg rather than w ham hock . I'd go back just for a plate of these greens and some hot sauce!
The sweet tea was good too. The Mac and cheese is too mushy for my taste. Yet the rice w kidney beans had good flavor.
    Itsy bitsy interior for lunch.
Service was slow. I had to ask a lot of questions before I ordered as our server was reserved and did't offer to walk us through the menu.
Parking in the area is a total hassle.
