Taste Good Malaysian Cuisine

“Other great dishes that I'd recommend are Hainan Chicken Rice, Beef Rendang, Indian Mee Goreng and Kangkung Belacan.”

“And the Singapore kari laksa is also a treat, and not solely reliant on curry and coconut.”

  1. Great price, great food, clean, feels home-cooked. Modest ambiance – good view of the playground and park.

Chicken is spiced perfectly. Roti Canai absolutely perfect. Better than anything you'd get in Manhattan. Lots of options. Will come again.

  2. Don't let Taste Good's unassuming exterior fool you, this place is great!

The Singapore laksa is delicious! The coconut milk broth was creamy, with hints of curry, and was just a tad spicy… heaven for my taste buds (love coconut milk and spicy dishes so this was a great combination!).  Dish contained thick, round, noodles, shrimp, half an egg, tofu, and fish cake.

Dishes are inexpensive and definitely shareable. Probably not a good place for large groups as the restaurant is a bit on the small side, but the place is practically empty before the dinner rush (around 7/7:30pm).

  3. My only exposure to Malaysian cuisine was at Penang (a chain in New Jersey). Even then, I don't know how authentic it is… so this review is based more on my personal preferences than the authenticity of the dishes.

Roti canai $2.75 was more like a flat pancake than a fluffy, layered, buttery pancake I was expecting. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't mindblowing.

The kari laksa $7ish seemed to be such a popular dish (not just on yelp – even older people in the restaurant ordered it too) that I had to try it. TBH it was a bit too sweet/fishy for me, that it was one of the first times I left noodle soup unfinished.

If you're gung-ho about malaysian food, then just come and try this place. If you're not, you might be disappointed.

  4. I came up here when I was visiting my wife for work. The good is that we were seated immediately (even though it was very crowded) and service is quick (my guess is thy make money on turnover). We didn't really know what we were ordering (just pointing at pictures that looked good) because we don't really know Malaysian food and our waiter didn't seem interested in explaining it. The noodle dish was great. The bread and it's sauce were also very good. The chicken dish we got was okay but it had so many bones. Maybe I'm just not used to it but it was a huge pain to eat and I kept biting on bones so o gave up (also didn't need a large because it was a ton of food). I'm glad I tried a new food and enjoyed it. Will probably go to other places in the area next time I'm back though.

    Cash only!

  5. I'm not very familiar with Malaysian food, yet I was impressed by how eclectic the menu was. It seemed like the menu drew on Chinese, Indian, and Thai cuisines.

I opted for the spicy fragrant chicken. As a fan of saisons and witbiers, I loved the flower flavors in the dish. It has a consistent and understated spiciness. In terms of prep style, it was similar to fried chicken that you'd find at Chinese-American restaurants but with a whole lot more flavor.

The menu is a bit intimidating. There are hundreds of items which makes it difficult to choose for those who are unfamiliar with the cuisine.

  6. Ambiance: has that neighborhood hole in the wall feel. If I came here often I'd probably call everyone auntie or something (and they'd know be by name cuz I'd be a regular).

Place is tiny and had a line, but moves quickly/ we shared a table.

Absolutely get the sizzling tofu. Wow. Superb. Homemade for sure and really yummy. Comes out steaming hot and they actually put an egg on the bottom of the dish which was interesting. The sauce is pretty good too, with shrimp and meat.

Curry beef rendang with dry noodles – good, although the beef wasn't hot, but more room temperature. I also requested extra spicy and the response I got was, well you can add hot sauce to it if you want. Um, ok I guess. There is a lot of oil on the bottom of this dish as well. So kind of a good but not great.

Hai nan chicken. Eh, bit of a let down dish. Would definitely pass on this. Would want to try the roast chicken if it's the weekend. Will say, the sauce it comes with is hella good though (not the soy based one, the other one). Like a sorta sweet, gingery, vinaigrette deal.

I also had one of the dried noodles, I think it was #117. I got it to go and had it for lunch the next day and it was quite good. Nice wok smokey flavor to it. Was recommended it by the Malaysian we shared the table with and it was spot on.

  7. What can I say about Taste Good Malaysian Cuisine?  Well, the article outside states they are known for their sting ray.  Hmmm…not in the mood for that.  Instead dare I say, I am in the mood for delicious meaty goodness which basically translates to short rib rice noodle soup with broth of course on this hot high humidity day.  And man was it worth it!  Oh so amazing!

First of all, awesome that this place has no wait and no need for reservation.  Just walk on in!  Whoo hoo!  In I went with my coworker at around 12 pm this afternoon after finding parking in Elmhurst which is possible right next to the hospital.

Well how you ask…well that is a question for another day.  Hey, I was surprised that it was not super packed, yet it is a Friday afternoon when most people are at work.  Thankfully, I get Fridays off in the summer.  Yay!  Life is good!

Second, the air conditioning was not at full blast which might be an issue if you like the subzero ice box temperatures of let's say the tundra.  It was more like cool fan and that's about it.

Third, the waitstaff was attentive and patient as we agonized over all 6 or was it 7 pages of menu.  I had cold water refilled and extra napkins brought to the table.  My waitress even offered to wrap up my food to go.  I bet my eyes were way larger than my stomach.  I couldn't breathe after eating half of my food, but that is all good!

Fourth, they have amazing lunch specials mostly under $10.  I also spy vegetarian options. I saw a myriad of noodle options as well.  I liked their images of these possibilities on their menu of highly sought items, so I didn't have to ask them over and over again…excuse me, what is belacan?  (which I think is a green of some sort…tasty looking like oong choi).  My colleague had ordered vegetarian tofu on rice with an appetizer of spring rolls.  Please see the photographs.

Good thing I have great vision!  I peeked at the adjacent table next to me which they had freshly steamed Hainanese chicken which I was thinking of, but somehow reneged.  Maybe because I already had chicken three times this week and needed a break or else would suffer from game fatigue.

In conclusion, I had a blast in here.  I wished they had avocado milkshakes, but you cannot always get what you want, but you can sometimes get what you need.  And I did.  I had definitely had an amazing time here!  Thanks Taste Good Malaysian restaurant!

  8. So this place is pretty legit. It's a sit, eat, and please leave kind of place, because it's so SMALL!

they turn tables pretty fast. Once you've acknowledge it's a eat and leave type of place, then it's all good – because the food is delicious, flavorful, and satisfying! Always satisfies Malaysian craving :D!
