  1. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal from there. Ordered sushi which came out fresh and flavorful. The dumplings were delicious as well.

Would definitely return due to quality of food.

  2. This is a very popular spot in Brooklyn for sushi and I can see why – comfy table seating and clean lined semi private dining rooms…where you sit Japanese style.  Shoes off and your feet go under the table in an alcove like seating.  This is my 100th Yelp review so I picked Tenzan for the honors.

Tip #1 – when the waiter or waitress comes to take your order, order everything as best you can.  Sometimes waiting for them to return is like waiting on a free refill – you never know when they will return.  Ha ha But seriously, it's super busy so I can see why it may take a while for them to return.  Someone always does so the good news is that you don't have to rely on one person to wait on you.  Even if it's not the same person, flag someone and they will come.

Tip #2 – do tell them if you want certain sushi/sashimi plated separately.  Restaurants like to play on presentation so it's happened before where they plate everything onto one if you don't specify.  Because I did the ordering for my group of 6, I specified what could and could not be plated together.  (Allergies)

Tip #3 – if you can, make a reservation.  Sometimes they're so busy on a given night, you can't tell how long you have to wait for a table.  Doesn't matter the group size … it matters the time you go.

Tip #4 – know that if you order a la carte sushi/sashimi pieces, each order is 1 pc.  Not two like many other places.  But note, their slices are thick cut.  Not thin.

Now onto the food…which is why they get the four stars.  I've been here on occasion when I visited Brooklyn (this is my old hood) and it doesn't disappoint.  Service is iffy but food is spot on.  The sushi is fresh and many are premium pieces.  The choices on the menu suit all folks…raw or cooked, hand rolls or standard rolls, small apps to big entrees.  Covers all territories, even noodle soups or fried rice.  Their dinner boxes don't disappoint in size, order options, and presentation.  When you order a dinner box, you can choose a California roll, sashimi, or sushi to fill a compartment.  It also comes w/ miso soup or a salad as well as other delicious side offerings – for ex: fresh cut fruit, shrimp dumplings, or gyoza.

My fav dish of the night was the "a la carte" sushi/sashimi pieces I ordered off the menu to have them plate as my dinner.  I normally would do the Sashimi dinner but this time I was craving very specific pieces so I ordered that way.  The scallop (aka hotate) sashimi was excellent.  Sweet and fresh, no briny flavor and it went down as smooth as it looks.  The other favorite of the night was the salmon.  Their salmon sashimi was cut thick so I ordered six pcs to supplement for an order of 10 that we usually order elsewhere.  The other outstanding piece of sashimi was the surf clam.  It was very fresh and the texture was a bit tougher as expected but not rubbery.  Perfection.

Other folks in my party ordered the cooked food – vegetable tempura, beef sukiyaki noodles, and the Shrimp Dinner box.  All were very flavorful and great for sharing.  I'd recommend this place any time.

  3. One star for the deplorable service. My friend and I came here one night to catch up over sushi and sake. Because we weren't getting a full meal, we opted to sit at the bar (which, by the way, I think is a great feature). At first, everything was fine. Our order was promptly taken and we didn't have to wait long for our food and drinks.

It was a little later in the evening on a weeknight, so it wasn't busy. However, there was an older man at the bar next to us who was drunk when we arrived and proceeded to get hammered as time went on. He kept talking to us and, at first, we were polite to him. At a certain point, he just became obnoxious and we tried to ignore him. Didn't work. He kept rudely butting into our conversation and began making inappropriate comments. I finally told him to leave us alone, but it didn't work.

We told a staff member that he was bothering us, though I don't think we should have even had to considering he was able to see it himself. He kind of just shrugged, but then told the man to settle down. Instead of listening, the man got louder and made a huge scene. It was very uncomfortable and common sense would have told the employees to kick him out. When I said this to the hostess, she informed me that he was a regular. And then continued to serve him alcohol.

I refuse to give my business to a place that condones this kind of behavior.

  4. Tenzan is a pretty good choice for sushi in Brooklyn.  If you're looking for huge pieces of sushi/sashimi or massively wrapped hand rolls.  For the price, you definitely get enough food and the quality is slightly above average.  We got ourselves a private booth seating where you first have to remove your shoes before entering. So make sure you don't wear those favorite socks with the holes in them.

Service was a little off, we had 2 servers for our group and they clearly didn't communicate with each other.  They were unsure if we received our food from the other waitress each time.  But overall they were very friendly towards us.

Tip : Request a booth if you have a large party. There's a light switch for you to call the waitress over.  It turns on a red lightbulb to alert them.  So close the door and cut out the noise from the rest of the restaurant, call them in when you need something.

  5. Excellent food and overall experience. I came here with family for dinner on a Friday night. I hear they're usually crazy busy but we got lucky this night. We had a private dining room, complete with the traditional 'taking shoes off' custom.

The salmon teriyaki dinner box was absolutely delicious with big portions. It came with the salmon teriyaki, rice, a large amount of veggie tempura with two large shrimp tempura, three pieces of shumai, and your choice of California roll, sushi, or sashimi. I had the sashimi option and it came with 6 fresh pieces.

  6. Come here a lot for many special occasion because they have big rooms for large parties. The eel rice is pretty tasty here. The food overall are pretty good and would definitely come back for more!

  7. Always a good time when I come here, stopped in for lunch with my babe, an as usual fast quick great service.
Good food an decent lunch prices.
I love love love here napkins I'm a big fan of roses so that touched me well.
Great bar setting an over all I'll be back when I'm in Bensonhurst 🙂
    Thx guys

  8. Heads up: rolls are little pricier compared to neighboring sushi restaurants

The restaurant's interior is bit more upscale, i think its really cute place to bring a date here! They have rooms where you can eat and follow the Japanese tradition (shoes off).

I really wanted donburi but did not want the meat option and was hoping to exchange it for tofu. The owner (i think) kept persisting me to eat meat, and said it was not possible to have tofu on the side. Okay… so i decided to go with vegetable yaki udon. Never had bad yaki udon before, Tenzan taste was similar to any other japanese restaurant.

Food wasn't bad, I really enjoy the interior. I appreciate the thought they wanted to protrude; wooden spoobs, pretty cups, rose stamped napkins… Though the service did not meet my expectation. Food dishes were served even when other dishes werent finished. So some of my party members were empty plated for awhile. the owner was really persistent on some food items that did not interest my party members.. I wouldn't mind coming back here, but hopefully have another waiter
