The Bagel Store

“I usually go with the honey whole wheat bagel and egg whites, but the bacon egg and cheese bagel/cragel is one of the best things I've ever eaten.”

“I didn't notice any issues with how it was cooked so I can't take off any stars for it, but overall, the cragel isn't for me.”

“The rainbow supreme bagel is about $10 and if you're not that hungry they will cut it for you to split with a friend!”

  1. We had to walk an hour to get here and boy I'm glad we did! Best bagel I've ever had and of course I had to have the tourist special. Plus the lady who helped us was the sweetest. This is definitely the place you should go to find something new, something you've never had before. That is something everyone should go for!

  2. The taste of the rainbow bagels is as wonderful as it looks! It is quite big and filling so it would be advisable to share with multiple people. My group of five shared two bagels. The workers were really friendly and helpful and explained all the different flavors of the rainbow bagels they had available. They even had a 420 hemp bagel since it was 4/19 the day we got there.

We got the cotton candy bagel which was blue and pink and also the vanilla-flavored bagel which was the rainbow-colored one, both with the confetti cream cheese because it would look good with the colorful image. They spread on ALOT of cream cheese onto the bagels which oozes out of the center of the bread. I would have expected this to be very sweet, just judging off the rainbow, artificial color. However, it was actually very good and not extremely sweet! Even though we got two different flavors, vanilla and cotton candy, they both tasted the same. The cotton candy one didn't have much cotton candy flavor. The flavor of the rainbow bagels kind of resembles a sugar cookie.

I recall the prices to be quite pricey. If i remember correctly, the two bagels total cost was around $13. It was a good experience though! Would recommend trying for the first time!

  3. Rainbow bagel with the confetti birthday cake cream cheese was delicious. This place is pretty sweet. Seems family owned and the staff is Brooklyn Friendly! Next time I come to NYC I'll make it a point to swing into Brooklyn and visit these guys again! Thanks Lou, the bagel store hit the spot!

  4. I came here because my FOMO got the best of me and when I saw that a Rainbow Bagel existed in the world, I had to find a way to make it mine!

I somehow got here at just the right time. The line was not out the door, but when I queued up, I looked behind me and all of a sudden it was wrapping around the block! I arrived just after 4pm on a Friday.

The staff announced they were making their last rainbow bagel batch of the day and were allowing 2/person and counted off people in line. The mother/daughter duo in front of me literally got the last rainbow bagels (they were going to order 4 between them) and when I was told I had missed the cut-off, I let out a defeated sigh and was going to just throw in the towel when the lovely order-taker kindly guilted them into letting me have one of their 4 rainbow bagels (especially after I told them I had just flown in from Austin and made a beeline from the airport here specifically for one). They acquiesced and let me have one of their RB's. I will never bad mouth someone from Long Island again!

The wait was well over an hour for the bagels to come out and be dispersed. I happened to also order the last cinnacragel w/walnut maple bacon schmear to hold me over and it was BOMG amazing! When I finally got my long awaited rainbow bagel (w/funfetti cream cheese) it was surreal…while it was not the best bagel I have ever had, it was still pretty tasty and the novelty was worth the wait.

The long wait aside, I had a good time here…and the reviews that dig on the staff, I have to say I had a completely different experience. The staff were awesome and even let me stay past closing to finish my bagel.

Would definitely recommend for the experience, though it may be a hot NY minute before I return unless I have about 2+hrs to burn.

  5. Possibly one of the most photographed food items (and certainly the most photographed bagel!), the famous Rainbow Bagel from The Bagel Store (also the most generic name for a store!) lived up to the hype. I'm usually not a fan of bagels, but the rainbow bagel – aside from its whimsical look – also tasted quite delicious. The bagel is very dense, and has nice chewy texture. In terms of the flavor/taste itself, I wouldn't know I was eating a rainbow bagel if I closed my eyes.

The winning recipe, in my opinion, is not so much the rainbow bagel itself, but the cream cheese. In particular, the Birthday Cake (Funfetti) cream cheese surprisingly goes well with bagel. It tastes more like frosting than cream cheese, probably because it contains mashed up cake pieces. I also tried Peaches n Cream (with real chunks of peaches) and Apple Pie (also with real chunks of apples) cream cheese – I'd recommend both!

  6. Rating The Bagel Store and one's 2 hour wait experience for Rainbow Bagels is difficult. The expectation level soars when you're waiting for 2 hours in line to arrive inside and find out you can only buy a maximum of 6 Rainbow Bagels. Having said that, I think that 6 is plenty if you're wondering what all the fuss is about. Also, I think the 6 bagel limit and the random occurrence of these bagels only a few times a year, is a smart marketing strategy. If these were readily available everyday, I don't think there would ever be a line-up.

The comments I received from showing friends these bagels range from, "yuck, they look like PlayDoh bagels" to "yum, they taste really good". My four star rating is primarily due to the buzz this place has managed to developed by putting some food coloring in bagel dough. On this particular sunny, but cool in the shade day, even the locals were coming up to us an asking why the line-up, and saying they have never seen such crowds. Well that's the power of social media and visually conflicting baled goods.

Whether its a black bun at Halloween at Burger King or a multi-colored bagel at The Bagel Store, there seems to be a fascination with eating things that don't "visually" seem to be appropriate to eat. The Rainbow Bagels at The Bagel Store are….ok. They taste slightly sweet and are best served toasted. If you closed you eyes and ate one you might sense a slight "cotton candy" sweetness.

Also, they are not cheap. For 12 bagels in total and two with lox, the bill was $72 and change. I think the Rainbow Bagels are around $4 each. And they only take cash (which you don't find out until after you've waited an hour to just get inside), however they do have an ATM inside.

Finally, they take the extreme flavored bagels to new levels with TV themed bagels with the deep blue Breaking Bad bagels and also spice things up with sriracha bagels.

  7. this place is underwhelming. the rainbow bagel is not that great. friendly staff however but meh, not worth the hype. but for sure makes a good snap photo!

  8. I was really excited to try the rainbow bagels here but to my disappointment it wasn't the best bagel I've ever had.

The colors provide no flavor so essentially it's just a plain bagel. But the bagel itself was quite dense and difficult to tear and chew into. I tried it with the funfetti cream cheese and it was way too sweet. It was more like frosting than anything else.

Try it for yourself but I wouldn't go out of my way for it again.
