Totoya Japanese

“$3 happy hour special for rolls, dumplings, and drinks is pretty darn good!”

“It's a 10 minute walk from my apartment — and there about 15 sushi shops on the way — but we'll definitely go back since Totoya is a cut above most of them.”

“It sets the bar well above average and has ruined other restaurants as they will never come close to this level of excellence.”

  1. "Eh, just ok"

I wanted to expect so much more with this place. First off, the decor of the restaurant is very nice and intimate and the service was great.

The food was the standard sushi flair. I ordered the sushi dinner box, which was about 16 bucks. The box had generous portions of food but I found the chicken to be rubbery and slightly under cooked. I found that 3 bucks for a soda is way too expensive.

The restaurant has a daily happy hour from 5 to 7 with 3 dollar appetizers. I would recommend checking out this restaurant during this time or during lunch, when the prices are cheaper, to determine if this restaurant will satisfy your sushi needs.

  2. In general, I really try to avoid eating raw fish at any restaurant that has a "B" rating. This place seems to waver between an "A" and a "B."  I think this probably tainted my expectation a bit.  The sushi is pretty cheap and they have a great lunch special and a $3 happy hour which is pretty cool.  The sushi is good, but unmemorable.  I do like that you can order either white or brown rice.

  3. At first glance, I thought this restaurant was called Toyota. I was all like…huh? That's so weird. A restaurant named after the car company? That could be pretty confusing. When I arrived, I stared at the writing when you first walk in and had an a-ha moment! It's Totoya.

I started with the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi…they give you the sauce on the side and you can pour it on yourself. It's also garnished with a small salad. Ohhhhhhh snap. So good! I looked at the cut of the yellowtail and thought I wouldn't like it because it was a little thicker than I usually like but boy was I wrong. It's probably one of the top 3 pieces of yellowtail I've had in Manhattan.

I also ordered the spicy tuna roll which was deeeeeelish! I ate every piece in likely less than 60 seconds. Then I finished with a California roll but rolled with soy paper not seaweed. Definitely recommend all 3 of these as it was enough for me (one person). The prices were EXTREMELY reasonable. Yellowtail was like 11 bucks (usually I pay 15-18) and both rolls were like 5 or 6 bucks each which is super cheap considering how scrumptious both were.

Definitely will be my go-to spot now. They also have happy hour – what? Can't wait to check that out…

  4. I was a little underwhelmed with the quality of food here. It was a little overpriced for what I ordered, and I have definitely had better sushi in this neighborhood. I ordered a rainbow roll and a salmon avocado roll. The salmon avocado roll was fine, but a little too chewy for my taste. The rainbow roll is what I was very disappointed in. Some of the fish on top of the cali rolls was dark brown and did NOT look appetizing. Also, the cali rolls were tiny!! There was no cucumber in them and only a little bit of crab.

The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, but I think the only reason I would come back is for the happy hour that they advertise, it seems super reasonable with $3 drinks and $4 apps/rolls.

  5. SO MUCH FOOD FOR THE MONEY!!!

If you think the appetizers are massive…try the sushi/sashimi combos…BOATLOADS OF FOOD!

Fish was fresh and the decor was cute. The area is nice and quiet and surprisingly not very full.

For dessert, I ate mochi ice cream *noms*

  6. Great place for a business lunch as they have a lunch menu that's great value and the service is quick. For my last meal in NYC, I really wanted to break away from my Asian theme but alas the pizza slice place I was going to go to was closed for Easter. The restaurant was a bit quiet for a lunch time but maybe because it was Easter Monday.

I ordered the hot stone bowl with spicy pork and kimchi which came with a miso soup or salad and my friend ordered a house special soup, which came with dumplings inside and spicy tuna roll. Everything tasted good and the hot stone was nice and hot and came with a delicious hot sauce – I ate up the whole thing! The dumpling soup was delicious and so were the tuna rolls although they could be made with more care.

  7. Friend moved to the UES so i was wooed to come see her new apartment.  First dinner.  I hope this isn't her new go to spot because its across the street from Sushi Seki which is far superior.  We both got the Rainbow roll and a side hand roll.  Usually a rainbow roll is fish over a california roll, here it was just fish over rice and a crab stick, pretty disappointing.  I hear it picks up on weekends, but we were the solo diners here on a Wednesday night.   Saving grace is the price, it's cheap and quick.
