Trinidad Golden Place Restaurant

“I tried a bake with beef and it was fantastic, but I can never really tell the difference in the dough between the doubles and the bakes.”

“I tried the house special for the first time and I loved it, not to salty seasoned just right.”

“The only thing that bugs me is they put their currant rolls out after 3pm.”

  1. We enjoyed the chicken roti, jerk chicken (was juicy and spicy), and the vegetable fried rice. Will come back to try more roti, like the oxtail and shrimp, and the coconut breads. Fast service and better to take out because of limited seats — about four bar stools with a narrow counter.

  2. Okay, I've gone here enough times now to say that this merits a proper 4 stars.  Yes they have a large menu, so it's difficult to get everything right, but the stuff they do well, they do REALLY well.  Plus if you see the way they interact with their clientele, you can tell that they're very well known and liked, and that's important in building and maintaining a business.

So what's the good?  I'm partial to the wantons, the doubles and the coconut drops.  The rest of their baked goods are also stellar.  They gave me a sample of the fish pies the other day and now I'm hooked on those too.  They're crispy, flaky and spicy as all hell.  The prices can't be beat either.  Go here on an evening and the line is usually out the door.  You don't get that kind of loyalty if you're not doing something right!

  3. Always fresh and delicious. You can get Trini Chinese food just like in Trinidad. What more is there?
They have sooooo many options for food.
The chowmein is yummy. I get that and shrimp wontons and I'm good to go.
    Gone eatin'

PS expect a line, especially on weekends but totally worth it. Plus you will have fun laughing at all the other patrons and the guys dancing to music in front while you wait.

  4. Just say YES to this place!

Say YES to Trini style Chinese food.

Say YES to curry chicken bakes.

Say YES to sweet, delicious current rolls with perfect flaky crusts.

Say YES to freshly baked bread.

    Say YES to fabulous prices.

Embrace everything they have to offer! Yes, yes, yes!

  5. Every time I'm in the neighborhood this is a MUST place to stop by for my fry bake with chana and vegetables, shrimp roti and doubles!

If I'm lucky,  a coconut roll!

This is not an eat in type of place but if you must eat the  food right way there are a few stools.

  6. The dine-in section consists of perhaps three crowded stools.

The sauce on the beef dinner was outstanding, starting out relatively mild but attaining sinus-clearing spice levels. The cabbage was fresh and crisp. The potatoes occupied that strange zone between mashed and potato salad. It was a ton of food for $9.

  7. Great Chinese style Trini food. Their portions are two times the size of a regular Trini spot so if I were you I would split a meal. I got fried whiting w rice & peas, plantain, and Chinese veggies. I usually dislike whiting but theirs is yummy. The store is tiny and ALWAYS crowded so be prepared, but the line moves fast though. Oh yeah there's also a baked goods section which they are known for. I've gotten butter bread from there for yeaaaarrrsss now but trynna cut carb intake haha.

  8. I can honestly say, I didn't know what to expect when my work said we were gonna have Trinidadian food for lunch at our monthly Town Hall Meetings, and was pleasantly excited to try something I might shy away from since it's unfamiliar and rarely recommended.

Some of the Trini people in my work were even skeptical on the quality of the food at first, but it was widely accepted by everyone.  There was playful banter on the American Trini's in where they can't tell real authenticity, but I heard few complaints.

Here's some of the things I've learned:

    1) Roti is not just an Indian thing
    2) There's a distinct difference in saying "peas and rice" vs "Rice and peas".  One Caribbean people say, and the other Trini's say; mess them up…and you probably die
    3) Chew SLOWLY!  The amount of baby shards of bone that I discovered in my beef and chicken dishes were a bit alarming.
    4) Curried potatoes were held back on the heat…damn it

Overall, it was nice to try, but I wouldn't say this is the best Trini food out there.  I'd love to try a REAL hot spot.
