  1. LOVE this place!!

Went here for the first time tonight after poo-pooing the 45 minute wait at Harlem Public (at 9pm? Pshaw). What my friends and I loved about it from the start was it was busy but not packed to the gills and the decor was extremely well done. (Think subway-tiled walls and minimalistic lighting – a fresh take on retro.)

That would almost be enough for a successful NYC Friday night dinner, but the food was amazing to boot. While this place leans towards mostly Italian food like pasta and protein-heavy main courses, they had burgers and salads and trendy appetizers like Parmesan polenta fries (unreal) and I was happy about it, since all I wanted was a big juicy burger. They've got tons of draft beers and ciders as well as affordable wines too.

Service was good and the vibe was everything I wanted it to be: relaxed, fun and ever-so-slightly on trend. I'll be back, Unione!

  2. (I should preface this by saying that it's hard for me to write an unbiased review, because I loved Tonalli so much. That was our place! Sigh …)

My fiance wanted to try brunch at Unione, so off we went on a Sunday morning. We were seated right away along the back wall, and the place was busier than expected for noon. The layout of Unione is really nice. I like the bar along the right wall, and the large projection television is easily viewable from every seat in the house. The hightop long tables in the middle are also really cool.

Brunch was … okay. The menu has a lot of options, and it was nice to see some standard dishes survived the remodel. I ordered Strawberry Pancakes with a side of Bacon. Fiance ordered Steak & Eggs. Our entrees came with a complimentary Mimosa, but my guy passed & got a cup of coffee instead. My mimosa was a little thin, and heavy on the champagne. I actually like mine a little pulpy, and it was clear that this was barely orange juice. It may have been orange drink? It was a bit too thin for me … but then again, it was free, so.

My pancakes arrived next, and I was actually surprised at the smaller portion size. Three small pancakes arranged on a large plate? Okay. The top pancake was a little undercooked, & the strawberries kind of fell out of the soft batter. The kitchen forgot my bacon, and I had to flag down our waitress to remind her. I only had one pancake left by the time I got my bacon. Oddly enough, it also took a while to get syrup. I saw other tables getting syrup, but I still had to wave at a busboy to ask for some.

My fiance's Steak & Eggs were good. He was pretty pleased. I tasted some of his home fries & they were nicely done. After my mimosa, I ordered a cup of coffee, and the busboy (who took my order?) asked if I preferred milk or cream. I appreciate that option!

So, brunch was okay, my drink was okay, service was a touch less than okay, and ultimately, Unione is … okay.

  3. Very cool little spot over near 145th. I honestly think this might be my new "go to" spot for a fun night. It's a great alternative if you want something low key and chill.
I had the salmon tartare, the green salad and the hummus plate. One word: YUMMY.
Everything was perfect and they make some of the most awesome dirty martinis in the area.
It's a little in the pricier side but the food quality is great so it's worth it.

Go here if you ever get the chance.
