  1. Blown away would be an appropriate statement.

I knew the reputation Waterzooi had but a lot of places have glowing reviews on Long Island and don't live up the quality of a NYC equivalent.  The only downside is that they are as expensive if not more expensive.  As always I would rather pay a lot for a great meal instead of paying for a bad meal.

    – We had two bowls of Mussels.
-Homard was overly decadent with the creamy broth and large pieces of lobster.  10/10 and still craving more!
-Calabrian this one was not my choice and I really would have never ordered it but glad we did.  The broth was amazing.  I was expecting a thicker tomato sauce but this was really a broth.

    – Rack of Lamb special
Although a smallish portion it was perfectly medium rare and still a solid dish.

    – Desserts here are giant and great.
-The Ridiculous Belgian Triple Chocolate Cake was well ridiculously great.  Also it is a good size for 2-3 people.

Can't wait for our next trip!

  2. We finally made it to waterzooi!  I had heard great things about this place and was looking forward to grabbing drinks and some appetizers with some friends after work

We started off ordering a few appetizers including parmesean truffle fries, a cheese fondue plate and some pork sliders. The truffle fries were definitely the winner. I was addicted from the first bite. The pork sliders were also delicious but a little messy. I thought the cheese fondue plate was just ok. They serve it with apples, grapes and bread to dip. Many of the apples were oddly cut and hard to pick up

The Belgian beer selection was outstanding. I wasn't too happy with the service we received. The waitress rarely came over to see how we were doing. It took us way too long to put in our order for a second round of beer

    Overall a solid restaurant.

  3. WATERZOO-WOW!

I came here with a group of about 15 coworkers, and we had a fantastic time and a delicious meal. We were seated in a small room in the back in a large L-shaped booth. This was a wise decision by the restaurant, because we got a bit loud after we'd all had a few glasses of wine. Our waitress was attentive and patient when working with our large group and trying to understand our groups' many different accents. She also was a dead ringer for Jillian Michaels, which we were certain to compliment her on!

To start, I shared a side of bacon glazed brussel sprouts with my boss. I LOVED them, and we cleaned that little cast iron pan out. They were the perfect tender, earthy veggie topped with a sweet and salty glaze with bursts of crunchy bacon.

For my entree, I finally selected the Waterzooi entree after a long internal dialog trying to decide between so many delicious options. This dish came with lobster, clams, mussels and the biggest shrimp I've ever seen (and that's saying something as I regularly eat fresh Gulf shrimp). The lobster butter sauce all this seafood was cooked and served in was quite possibly the most delicious broth I've ever tasted. It was so smooth and flavorful that I wanted to drink straight from the bowl, but I settled for soaking it up with bread. Despite all the shellfish in this dish, there was no grit at all — everything was perfectly cleaned and retained that beautiful fresh seafood flavor. This entree easily tops my list of best seafood I've ever eaten.

For dessert, some of us shared a delicious and perfectly executed creme brulee. You could see and taste the fresh vanilla bean used in the custard, and the bruleed top cracked with one tap of the spoon.

I really loved Waterzooi and truly hope I have an opportunity to return.

  4. What an experience here!!
For our 3 year anniversary i decided lets go here i havent been here in years and i was in a mussel eating mood so what better place!

We were seated quickly.  Booked through good ole open table! Our server was named Stephanie she was grear really efficient!!

After reviewing fellow yelper posts (thanks guys and dolls) We decided to order and share the appetizer truffle lobster mac and cheese! HOLY MOLY! Super warm and gooey. This already set the bar high!

Now on yelp it is very decieving to realize portion size let me tell you 1 pot of mussels is good for 2-3 people easily with another appetizer. There was at least 150-200 mussels in the pot!

The mussels aa they should be when cooking open up if they are fresh.  Let me tell you every single mussel was open that means someone checks  this!

I ordered the paella mussels which always included some spicy chorizo, shrimp, clams and of course mussels.  Literally the never ending pot i took 3/4 of it home!

My bf ordered bourbonaise mussels.  He didnt want to take them home so he was forcing himself to eat them all and he did!

Since it was a special dinner we each got dessert i opted for cheesecake it was good just a little dense for my liking. My bf ordered the peach sorbet. He absolutely loved it ive never see a man who never orders dessert really enjoyed it!

    Waterzooi you did not disppoint!

  5. OMG I love this place.  Especially the Moules e Frites.  Super tasty. They have a great beer selection and the service is always good when I go there.

  6. Stopped in one weekend day for lunch when our first choice was closed for a private party. Convenient location – right on Franklin Ave, walking distance to all the shops on Seventh Street and all down Franklin. Parking is in the lot outback. We were placed near the bar (back of the restaurant – where a hostess is, near the parking lot) at a corner table and then were told that the hostess was training and was incorrect to put us there (reserved area or something), so we were placed at the Franklin Ave facing end of the restaurant. We were also shuffled around with waiters. Not quite sure what was going on, but it seemed as though the restaurant staff was a bit confused that day.

Silly service confusion aside, the restaurant was great! The beer selection is vast, so you'll have no problem finding a decent drink. For food, I had the Chipotle BBQ Burger after deciding between that and the Le Mac Daddy. The waitress helped talk me down from the HEAVY sounding Le Mac Daddy (maybe mac and cheese shouldn't go on your burgers). The burger was tasty and the fries were yummy.

All around you'll see the delicious looking mussels in tons of different varieties. I'm not really into mussels, but if I was, it would be a wonderful adventure to go through their menu.

In the end, the place is a little pricey but if you can validate paying the price, even for lunch or brunch, stop in for a good beer and an even better meal!

  7. So, I find it a bit shocking I haven't reviewed one of my favorite places to dine… Yeah, tough for me to pick favorites but Waterzooi would definitely rank up there as a favorite.
    Why?
    MU$$EL$!!!
    Un-freaking-believable mussels.

Okay, so, for years I had this place on my Wishlist and a couple years back I finally got the random opportunity to check em out; I dove on the chance!

The owners own quite a lot and they always seem to know what they are doing no matter their target demographic.
If you didn't know they've not only got Waterzooi, but Novita next door (who uses the same mussels) as well as owning croxleys, now you know.

My favorite things to order on this menu for one, is the sweet potato gnocchi which is almost like a carbonara of sorts and it's just goddamn amazing; I don't go to Waterzooi without ordering that dish as well as a giant pot or two (or three) of mussels. These things are the best you will ever have.

I'm that lucky SOB boyfriend of a particularly awesome waitress from Novita next door. (Man she's cute) She gets to try and bring home some of the best stuff this island has to offer and boy am I grateful.

Anyway, from the amount I've spent at the restaurants combined and the amount I've explored the menu, there's just not much to be disappointed with.

If you aren't into mussels, I'm very very sorry you live such a sad life, however this menu will make you happy too, lil' buddy.
Get the Wellington burger, orrrr get the sliders with bacon cheese fondue…
Please also try that gnocchi I mentioned earlier.

If you're a real winner though, and enjoy mussels, you haven't lived until you take a peak at this menu. So for you, big fella, let me tell you about a few of the many variations.

    1. The crowned jewel, the "Homard mussels" – this is like ordering two amazing dishes in one, the best and heartiest serving of lobster bisque, with a giant pot of melt in your mouth mussels, brimming with big chunks of lobster meat.
The minute you sink your teeth into the buttery claw meat you wont put your fork down until you run out and pick up your bowl to drink that heavenly sauce left over. (Oh so classy)

    2. The hidden gem in my opinion, may even be better than the Homard in that the "Thai Mussels" are lighter, they are 'coconutty,' 'pineappley,' creamy, and just superly.duperly.amazingly.saucy. Touched up with lemongrass and so darn good.

    3. One of my girlfriends favorites is the "Farmhouse mussels" they take these glorious bastards and braise 'em in a beautiful farmhouse Belgian ale, throw some wonderfully smokey bacon in and hit it with some oven dried tomato; yeah, that'll hit the spot any night of the week.

Their options are practically endless when it comes to mussels from the glorious "fondue moules" with leeks, ham, beer and fontina, to those buffalo sauced "lucifer moules". You won't be let down.

I've yet to try them all despite my eager, drooling, cravings because I have my faves, but I'm sure before long I will and you should too!

Although it's difficult, try and save room for dessert, their pastry chef is great at what she does.

  8. I can't believe I'm updating this review and it's still a 5.

Last night after work I came here with one of my gals to have some mussels and a drink or two.

The original plan was Sushi but at the last minute we tossed that idea out the window and decided to come here. Let me tell you… BEST decision ever made.

So now I've been to Waterzooi 3x and each time it gets better and better. This time we got the following:

    – A Framboise beer for me. I mean really don't act like you're surprised.
    – Prosecco for said gal pal
    – Field Greens Salad with Cippolini Onions, Fourme D'Ambert (tasted like a cross of Gorgonzola/Bleu Cheese), Candied Pecans, and Asian Pears. It came with a horseradish dressing but what we did was ask for it on the side. Along with balsamic vinegar and balsamic vinaigrette. Listen… this may sound really weird. But it was super good so listen closely. What I did was first drizzle a little of the balsamic vinaigrette on. Then I added the straight up vinegar (ok quite a bit cause my mouth was a little tingly). Finally a little bit of the horseradish dressing a couple of bites in. Tangy and a little spicy & complete GAME changer! We both agreed we'll be getting this salad again the same exact way next time! Oh man so good!
    – Homard Mussels AGAIN! Yaaaay! Last night they were extra good and extra lobster meaty! So so good! They were like butter. Sheer perfection. And of course the frites and mayo were a solid.
    – Vanilla Bean Creme Brûlée which was decent. Except not the best and they torched the top of it a little too much.

Anyway… this was an excellent meal overall with a ton of laughs and many more inside silly jokes.

I will continue to reiterate that if you love mussels and you're in the Garden City area you must come here!!! You must!

    Until next time Waterzooi…
