“With all the choices up and down 9th Avenue, I was loyal to Wondee Siam II. Try their special, shrimp and noodles in a clay pot.”

  1. My boyfriend was craving Thai Food (what's new? Haha) and the first two places we went to had a 45-minute wait. We stumbled across Wondee Siam II and gave it a shot. This place was okay. Service was mediocre. They sat us down and after 5 minutes they asked us to move because a 6-top came. I was alright with that but after that it took a while before the server came to take our order. Whatever, not too much of a big deal. When our server came by, we asked her if the large tom yum was enough to share and she said yes. We got it and it was on the smaller side. My boyfriend then wondered if we should have gotten two small bowls instead of a large one. It didn't make sense why it would cost $4 for a small portion and $12 for a large one that wasn't enough for two people. Maybe they added more protein if you get a large one versus small? I really don't know. Besides the portion, the soup wasn't the greatest. I think there are definitely better places that make great Tom Yum out there. We got our food and mine was good. I got Beef Pad Kra Ree. If you add some of their chili sauce to it, it would taste even better!

Wondee Siam isn't the greatest, but wasn't as bad. I don't think I would come back as their neighboring competitors have better to offer.

Tip: don't buy wine here. They have it by their side station and some aren't corked. They just leave it there. You see it when you walk out of the restroom. I asked for a taste of Shiraz and it wasn't great. The bottle seemed like it has been open for awhile. Just stick with the classic, Singha Beer.

  2. A much larger space that the original Wondee Siam.  They offer a brunch weekend menu that comes with tea or coffee.  But no refill on your coffee.

The portions are on the smaller side just enough for one.  Come with friends so you can share and taste all the dishes.

The highlight for me was the pad Thai.  Sweet, tangy and not overcooked.

The tamarind duck was also very good.  It was cooked just enough where the meat is still a little pink and hence wuite tender.

The curry and pad kee Mao were just average but added variety to our choices.

Service was a little spotty.  I asked for extra napkins that never came so I had to take from a neighboring table.  Come here for the food, not ambience or service.

  3. We stopped in here after a show at Lincoln Center because the other restaurants we wanted to go to were closed. Because they stay open just that little bit longer, I am inclined to like them. I would give Wondee 3.5 stars if I could. It is an average Thai food restaurant. I had the tofu with eggplant and it was good. The Kee Mao Noodles was ok. Nothing special.

If you are running late and need to have a meal when all the other places are closing down, this place is for you. It is not bad at all, but could improve.

  4. They must have saved a lot of ingredients while cooking. My curry consists of shrimps, bamboo shots, some basil leaves, and the curry soup. That is it!

Prices are low, but I still expect better. The shrimps from my curry taste like they were boiled separately and thrown into the pot right before serving. There was no curry flavor in the shrimp, and vice versa no shrimp flavor in the soup.

I sat next to a couple who were on a date. There was another couple on the other side of the room. I have to laugh but please, there are hundreds of excellent wine bars for dating in Manhattan. The food and ambiance here is neither intimate nor romantic.

  5. Wonder Siam II is a well-kept secret. It's rarely very crowded even on a Saturday night, but the food is just as good as the more popular Wondee Siam, which perhaps has a cult following because it's BYOB and is more intimate (well, small). Sometimes waiting in line has an appeal. II has some excellent dishes that the original does note: a plate called Squid in Love, which at only $15 or so, includes tender fried squid in a piquant sauce.

  6. Good lunch spot on ninth avenue. $8.95 deal that comes with choice of soup or spring roll and entree. The entree size is pretty large! Seated quickly and got our food at a good time. The pad see ew wasn't bad but felt like the dish was out for a while after it was cooked. The top part was kind of cold. Overall, if you're not picky and just looking for a spot to sit down and chow quickly, this is a good option. I also liked that they had pineapple fried rice as part of the lunch special. More options than other thai places in the area.

  7. You may have heard that Hells Kitchen has a lot of Thai places. Alas it is true. However, not all are good.

Wondee Siam II is the offshoot of the more popular Wondee Siam across the street. This restaurant has the same menu (I think?), but a bigger space. If Wondee Siam I is busy, Wondee Siam II should be your next visit.

The food itself is good, it is reasonably priced, and service is fast.

  8. Came here the other night because Wondee Siam 1 was over crowded and the wait was too long for my party of 6 to endure.  WS2 is just across the street from WS1.  So why not just cross the street and get your Thai on? Everything we got was good and with no complaints.  Totally recommend the following items: Pad Thai, papaya salad, green curry, Pla Yum Lemongrass fish (+$3 a bigger fish), Duck Kra Prow and of course finish your meal with a mango sticky rice to share.  Portions are great for sharing.
