  1. Germany was my boyfriend's favorite country when he was abroad. There is something about it- that je ne sais quoi- that has him repeating nostalgic bits here and there. (Apologies for using a French term to describe this "it factor".) For my first time trying Currywurst, I was highly impressed by this place.

First of all, I've never been to Germany, but this small place made me feel like I was in Germany. Albeit a small sit-up place, it was ultra cool and transported me temporarily. Also, the servers were ultra cool & immediately got us seats.

The place serves different types of Currywurst, beers on tap, and wines. We tried the paprika and kaese with a 3 heat factor. (Heat factor 0-4. With 4 having the ghost pepper factor.) It was indeed spicy, flavorful, delicious. The sauce was very delicious and the bread just soaked up all this flavor. Although approx $8 may seem a little steep for some because of the small portions, I think it is fair. Chelsea Market is about trying a lot of different things & the price is fair for the portion you receive, but don't expect a full meal. I think this place would be a perfect pre or post dinner bite. Plus grab some beer and enjoy being in Germany right here in NYC for a bit.

  2. Literally replaced nampang to be my favorite sandwich shop in Chelsea market, in ONE SECOND. Plus they have the seating too, unlike all the other non-fancy spot in there. Hands down! Will revisit 🙂

  3. Way too expensive for what they give you. You basically pay 9 dollars (after-tax) for a sausage. It was super small. In Germany, it comes with fries and a big portion of sausages for a couple of Euros only.

The taste was also meh. Definitely cannot compare to the ones I've had in Germany.

My husband and I were on an all day walking tour of Manhattan and our lunch stop was at the Chelsea Market. We didn't have the time for a sit down meal but wanted more than your usual sandwich.  The two of us are a fan of fancy sausages.  I'm not a fan of american hot dogs but I do love a good German sausage or in this case, chicken sausage.  You choose your toppings, how hot you want your sausage, and the type of sausage that you want.  My husband had a sausage made with Veal, and ordered it extra hot.  Mine was pretty damn spicy and I didn't even get the hottest and my husband said it was very hot.

We both got onions and sauerkraut and shared an order of fries.  The sausages and fries were awesome and super filling.  Prices were somewhat high for a quick meal, but not unreasonable considering the location (nothing is really cheap in NYC, especially in this neighborhood).  I also had a nice German pilsner to wash it down.  I would definitely return if I'm in the area and I love the diversity of dishes that Chelsea Market offers.

  5. My friend and I were walking around Chelsea market and decided to grab something from here after feeling hungry. We ordered a spicy Kaese (beef sausage) which came out in a small plate and doused in some kind of curry sauce. The dish was more like an appetizer and won't fill you up but it was fun to try! I really like the curry sauce due to the hint of sour and spiciness flavours. The bread dipped in sauce complemented the whole dish quite well. It was kind of expensive for the little amount of food but like I said, it was a fun dish to try.

  6. This was my first time trying currywurst. The small portions make this place better for a snack than a full blown lunch. Luckily, I was in Chelsea Market with some friends who wanted to sample various vendors.

We ordered the Currywurst with Paprika (pork, paprika, garlic), the original tomato-based sauce and a spicy level of 2. Level 2 was already decently spicy to me. The currywurst comes with a soft baguette to dip in the sauce. The sauce tastes less curry-like and more ketchupy. I liked the sausages, but again portion is too small for $8. I loved the side of fries we ordered with it. Not sure how they are German, but they were super crispy and especially tasty dipped in the sauce.

I was really anticipating this place opening and walked by several times just to check. But ultimately, I was a little disappointed. Maybe my expectations were just too high.

  7. I ordered the currywurst ($8) and in the middle of it, realized I was just ordering sausage and a roll, but did not end up committing $5 more for fries.

I went with the knackwurst, which was flavorful with soft bologna like meat, although without much of a texture on the skin. The sauce was a familiar ketchup with curry and a medium kick of spice as I asked. However, after fewer bites than the fingers on my hands, the sausage was gone and I was left with half a stale hoagie roll that I ended up throwing out most of. I'm unsure why that roll couldn't instead be just a small portion of fries.

In comparison, in Berlin, a currywurst would come with two sausages and fries for about 2-4 Euro. Compare that to $13 if you try to get a "proper" currywurst here…

Also, a small Diet Coke glass bottle (around 8 oz.) is $2.50.

  8. Going here, I prepared myself of small portions and lunch price tags. That being said, I got the Currywurst with paprika and a medium spice level.

I won't lie, I loved the dish.  My version had plenty of curry flavor and I wanted more of the sauce after I finished the sausage.  I would honestly return for the sauce itself, which would probably make a boot taste good!

I also ordered a side of their house made sauerkraut, which was delicious! I'm not a huge fan of sauerkraut, but my boyfriend wanted to try it so we got it.  It wasn't as vinegary as other sauerkraut options in the world and had depth of flavor with each bite. There was quite a serving size for it, which was concerning as it was same size, if not larger than our main Currywurst dish! Interesting…

Overall I might come back, but considering there are more filling options for the same price within 1 walking minute, I might not too. I can easily see them lose business quickly if they don't reevaluate price for quantity. Try it if you're interested!
