  1. – Chocolate/Nutella Babka is all you ever need to eat again in your life.
    – Challah was very good.
    – Cinnamon roll is a must get.

The space gets a little crowded but make your way to the babka cart and be happy when you get a warm one!

  2. Awesome bakery! I've tried their 5-seed challah, chocolate babka, walnut bread, and a tunisian sandwich. Everything was amazing, and I will be returning regularly… However, it is a little annoying (to me) that there is never anywhere to sit — this being the UWS, everyone has a stroller and backpacks and purses and coats, and of course each person takes up a few chairs and a couple tables, and of course they are insulted when you ask to sit down, so I wish it were standing-only, you could fit three times as many stools in the same amount space where currently only a few tables are… Also, the cash registers are on the far end of the store, so when someone yells NEXT you have to walk all the way over to them and they have to walk all the way back with you to the front of the store if you want anything that is over there, and basically everything is up front, whereas only the coffee machines and cash registers are in back, so it takes quite a bit of back and forth and push and shove and confusion and frustration (since it is a small, crowded store) just to place an order, especially if you want multiple things. And I will definitely always want multiple things, because, again, this is an amazing bakery, but, anyway, I will most definitely be returning regularly.

  3. Friendly service and fresh-baked goods are always on offer at this small outpost of Breads Bakery.

Discounts in the evening as they get closer to closing time.

Things I don't love, here, are few.  The coffee is only okay.  The regular baguettes are offered a little stale, on purpose I think, but it's too much, you could chip a tooth on them.

But everything else is tops.  Everyone raves about the babka but, for me, the challah is king.  And the fruit tarts, which can be almost comically loaded with fresh berries.  And the veggie sandwiches, which are like what a kibbutz would offer if it ran a sandwich stand.

Also!  Breads in general is a great option for holiday goods.  Sufganiyot for Hannukah, hamentaschen for Purim, and all sorts of non-leavened goodness for Passover–if you need to buy something appropriate for a Jewish holiday, and don't know what to do: Breads.  Just make sure to reserve what you want ahead of time, because they'll probably run out.  Here at the UWS post, you'll have to come by the shop itself, to reserve–they do not, at the time of writing, have a phone.

  4. I am so happy to have stumbled upon this place. I often find myself in the Lincoln Center area ravenously hungry but not wanting to drop $17 on a sandwich. This place is the perfect solution to my quandary. I popped in and was incredibly indecisive about whether to get the avocado or breakfast sandwich. The gal behind the counter was very bubbly and helpful and patiently gave me her opinion on both. I ended up getting the avocado sandwich, which did not disappoint. The service here is amazingly friendly, especially for New York, and it really helped brighten up my day.

  5. Drop everything you're doing and go get some babka from Breads RIGHT NOW! You have not lived until you've tried the chocolate Nutella babka from Breads. I mean you REALLY haven't. You might think you have, but you haven't. The babka is slightly crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. The entire thing works so well together, it'll bring tears to your eyes. MUST MUST MUST TRY.

Also, the rugelach is super yummy!

  6. 4 tables and one family style, a few outdoor tables as well. Has a bathroom!

Good spot for a snack/light lunch. I got a Poppyseed Danish and an Decaf Americano (props for a bakery with decaf options!), bakery was fresh, coffee was decent. Helpful and prompt staff.

Next time I will have to try the bahka bread as it looks amazing, seems to be their specialty. It's a large loaf but I was told their rugelach near the counter are similarly made. Great tip.

The space feels a bit like a chain in terms of vibes, or lack of. Looks like a Panera. But much better quality bakery! The 80s pop hits are a bit random… "Domoarigato mister roboto…" Not feeling the epic high notes and synth rhythms with my midday coffee. "Total eclipse of the heart" is next.

Nonetheless, a nice option for the Lincoln area.

  7. Yum! I've been going to the Union Square location for years so I'm so glad they have one further uptown. Can't go wrong with any of the breads and I usually just go with whatever the daily special is.

  8. Spectacular as usual!! When I found that Breads was coming to UWS there were tears in my eyes. It's probably my favorite bakery in NY. So much good stuff that you have to be very precise on what you want that day or just eat everything and die of happiness.
Anyway, finally I went yesterday to this location that is a little bit smaller than the original in Union Square so it has less things although it has a couple of pastries the original doesn't have like the Concord Cake which is delicious!! I wanted chocolate and this cake is chocolate madness: chocolate mouse with chocolate cookie with chocolate merengues with chocolate ganache with more chocolate. Amazing stuff! A little bit overpriced for my wallet: almost $12 for a small cake for two. It is worth ordering it but I guess not an every-time-selection.
Obviously they have the babkas which run out pretty quickly especially the chocolate Nutella. It was 4 pm on a Sunday and they were already gone!
Babka, mmmm, it just mouth watering. The best in the world. It's one of those things that doesn't have any comparison with the rest of its similar copies, like the cookie from Levain Bakery. It's THAT GOOD!
I think some they opened recently they have things to try on the counter. Samples of their stuff. When I went they had the poppy seed roll which are excellent. Similar to a babka but without the chocolate and Nutella bomb. Also the cheesecake was there to try. A blueberry cheesecake of the month which is not for my palate but it was light and flavorful.
We ordered a Jerusalem baguette, a cheese straw and an olive bread stick to go for the dinner we had later. Anything and absolutely everything coming out of that oven is heaven in the form of food. Incredible bread!
I'm so happy that Breads is in the neighborhood!
