  1. For my 800th review I thought I would review this restaurant that  ended up serving to be a place of great happiness.

You see I normally don't venture past 125th (Hey that's already much better than most New Yorkers!), however the majority of the Cuban side of my family all live in the vicinity of Washington Heights and Harlem.  So when a family member passed away the whole family ended up gathering at a nearby funeral home for the wake.

El Conde ended up being the restaurant we all ended up and they were more than happy to accommodate the group at a relatively late hour (10pm) for dinner.

The server that was taking care of our table was attentive and amazingly remembered all our various orders and customizations, which is extremely impressive given that most servers I've had at other spots mess up plain jane orders after writing them down on a pad.

Prices are more than reasonable for all the dishes given NYC standards but definitely higher for the immediate area.  The menu is expansive with numerous options, there is certainly something for everyone.

Unlike other restaurants that cheap out on some of the simple things, they are more than generous.  Constantly fulfilling the request for more bread, gravy, limes and other miscellaneous fixings.

They're known for their churrasco and that was definitely a very well prepared dish, cooked perfectly to everyone's preference. The pollofongo (Chicken Mofongo) was what I ended up ordering and was much more than I could finish in one sitting, with pieces of fried chicken both in large chunks and mashed into the plantains.

They have a decent selection of desserts with the three milk cake being the most popular. Their flan is a little denser than most traditional flans, but was equally tasty and not overly sweet.

They didn't rush us at all and the server hilariously treating us like family, joining in on poking fun and generally helping us have a great time during a time when we might all have been in lower spirits.

Don't forget to try the mamey shake if you're ever up here, that in itself is worth a visit. It's absolutely delicious and apparently according to some family members extremely difficult to find a good one below 59th street.

The decor has a strangely homey feeling to it and it makes it a comfortable place to have a communal meal. They're big enough to accommodate a large group and are fast with the food prep with it all arriving within 10 minutes of ordering.

The only weird thing I can't figure out is the giant "Push" sign on the Men's bathroom door which ended up being a pull to open door. I felt like the kid from the farside comic at the school for geniuses.  I can't figure out why it's labeled that way except that the door swings out into traffic so maybe you should push it shut? I dunno…

Either way, "In The Heights" is where it's at and El Conde helps anchor that. Great food, good service and a warm atmosphere. Everything you need to enjoy yourself.  Too bad they don't deliver past an 11 block radius.

  2. My boyfriend is a big steak lover and we've had many meals here.  The take out is just as good as the to go

  3. Service: Unobtrusive and welcoming

Food: We had, the croquetas, shrimp mofongo, tostones, skirt steak, white rice and red beans…pretty much enough to feed an army 🙂

Everything was delicious, well seasoned, cooked just right.

    Can't wait to go back!!!

  4. On my tour de WaHi, I brought my family to this timeless restaurant that took me back to my Dominican roots.

I am the first to admit it that service isn't impressive  BUT, they aren't rude, it's just they are busy and know the food is good enough to make up for it. It's more like an "order and here you go, buh bye" kind of service.

Mofongo with shrimp: Fluffy smashed plantains mixed with cracklins paired with that perfect crisp and juicy shrimp that dance I  your mouth. Major MOJO baby.

The churrasco with tostones, rice and beans? SHOOOOOOOO. Good stuff. These peeps are comparible to el malecon. I feel their steak and mofongo is better. Go to malecon if you want a solid chicken and empanadas.
