  1. El Sombrero is a clubby LES Latin restaurant, with a menu mainly of appetizers(/small plates/tapas/whatever  (from around $8 to $12) but also with big plates, around $30. It's a cool vibe, but it's loud, at least it was when I was there, on a Friday night.
I got the red snapper ceviche ($12) and it was A+, with just the right ratio of chilies to fish. It's served with a handful of tortilla chips, but if you're ordering this as dinner you may want to add a side ($5). My friend got the "LES burger" ($14) and liked it a lot. It came with fries, and they were some of the best fries I've had in a long time. Great texture and really well-seasoned.

  2. Came here to this quaint little place for some quick brunch before heading to the airport back to Toronto~ the food here was quite good, particularly really liked the tacos! The sauces were really tasty with it 🙂 they also give you large portions for your food, I love how they gave us a whole cup of rice with beans on the side of the tacos 🙂 we ordered the potato hash with smoked salmon and eggs Benedict and it was quite delish as well! love how this neighborhood has such variety of foods and drinks!

  3. I just about made a vow to never go to brunch in NYC again – I've had enough of the long waits and crowds. So I enjoy going to restaurants during my low key times. I went with two friends on Sunday for early dinner and it was great. Jose aka Jr. was friendly and engaging. Our waitress was wonderful. The food was straight forward (nothing complicated sounding) but really well seasoned and tasty. There was also happy hour. On Sunday.

All around a good time and it's on my list of places to return to.

  4. One word comes to mind after I try my first bite. Holyshit!!!! Ok, it's two words condensed to one, but it's that good.

The guac comes and I think…what are the little bites on top? Croutons? Tater tots? Oh no, it's a cheese bite. Genius. It give the already perfect guac a crunch that I've never had. The chips are perfect but also served with a lightly fried plantain. Inventive and delish.

I go now now to a taco dish that I'll dream about. A perfectly cooked semi sweet pork served in a bao. With a cucumber relish. Asian southwest mixed with Spanish? Who knows other than you'll crave seconds.

The burger ( I know… At El Sombero?) looked fantastic and all the other dinners looked great.

It has history and passion of its owner Junior and his staff. True passion and care. I had Sweden as my guide and she was spot on.

Drinks were fun, wine list good but come hungry and enjoy the vibe. This place is for real.

  5. Dodgy looking, only takes cash, but the food was solid. It's cash only, and they offer a for-a-fee ATM, but that wasn't working when we were there (though there was no notice of this and no one mentioned it).

For late night Mexican feasting, it was pretty good. Would I go here for a nice meal out? Nope. just before our party left, a large group of what appeared to be a high school theatre group (or similar) arrived and was so loud that I couldn't hear the person sitting next to me. The kids in that large group started doing tequila shots and I was happy to take my leave.

Not the best atmosphere. Not amazing. But a-ok for a "let's get something unfancy to eat" outing.

  6. Absolutely , LOVE their fish tacos and margaritas ! Heard there under NEW MANAGEMENT …. The new owners are very  attentive with food and service which are two most important things that I look for when dining out!  The bartender Felix makes some SLAMMING MARGARITAS! That you must try ! Can't wait to stop by again…. Although I heard that they'll be closing for a couple of weeks for renovations.
WILL Definitely be GOING BACK !

  7. The bartender was the nicest and friendliest person we encounter all evening LES. I know it's busy and what not.

They have blue moon on tap. Yeahh!!! I was happy and we had to down it in less than 30 mins BC they were closing. The food looked tasty. Can't wait to try it! Yum!!

  8. I dropped into with my party around midnight as many other places in the LES were packed. We chose this place to avoid the long lines from other bars. There is no table service after 10pm, so we ordered a few beers at the bar and sat ourselves down at a table. The music isn't too loud to have a conversation and the beer price ($8) was reasonable. This is a fairly less popular place to grab drinks, but doesn't fail to have messy people stumbling around.
