Fairway Market

“Complete with gorgeous Statue of Liberty views, the always amazing cheese and produce selection and a parking lot!”

“However, I can only rate what we experienced, which was their hot and cold food bars, as well as the olive bars.”

“Their organic section is much cheaper than Whole Foods and they are constantly running deals.”

  1. I had thought that this was going to be another ubsurd expensive supermarket that continued the gentrification of Red Hook. I was only half correct.

Fairway does have a unusually large selection of organic quinoa gluten-free blah blah blah for those who want that kind of stuff (if you can't find your vegan butter at Fairway then it doesn't exist). But they also have the regular poor folk stuff and cheap prices! They have drumsticks at .79ct a pound! I almost lost my damn mind when I saw their prices on meats. It's actually worth doing some shopping here for any of my fellow broke constituents.

Bonus is the smells of Hometown BBQ across the street.

  2. I have come to Fairway many times. Some of these everything looked super fresh, some others… not.
But the selection they have is huge and there are often excellent offers.
Limited organic options, of course comparing with WholeFoods which I have nextdoor. But plenty of almost everything else you need.
Check expiration dates, with all that stuff sometimes some products might be really close to exp. date…
Take advantage of their olive oils tasting area (even if sometimes it's messy and bread is no more available).
And I love the coffee aroma that spreads in the whole coffee and baking area.
Big parking in front, which makes things easy.
If you are hungry, stop by at the seafood place in front of it for a snack or drink before shopping, or if you are very hungry go for the BBQ (hometown) also in front of it.
Two great dinner options, with easy parking!

  3. This is a great destination marketplace for Brooklynites.  You can spend the day in Rod Hook enjoying the great outdoor spaces and up-and-coming restaurant scene and grocery shop before heading home.  Of course you'll need a vehicle of sorts, as the nearest subway is quite a trek.  The parking lot can get a bit crowded so carpool when possible.  The selection of groceries and fresh produce is incredible.  Prices are on the high side but bargains can be found.  Think of this place as a slightly less expensive Whole Foods with a bit warmer and more charming personality and local feel. (Fairway is actually a chain.)  Besides the produce, I enjoy the pickle and cheese selection, fresh fill-it-yourself bags of granola and the olive oil and vinegar room (tasting bread provided, though not frequently replenished).  It can be a little confusing to navigate and crowded at times but it's still one of my favorite supermarkets.

  4. I have been going to Fairway for years! In fact my first Fairway was the one in Harlem before I moved to Brooklyn. While I love the place I think that since Sandy hit somethings    Have changed which were part of why I looked the place so much.

For instance their salmon burgers are now half the size yet still the same price. In addition the hot food buffet in general doesn't look as good as it used to and the offerings have changed.

I am not sure what happened but I am finding myself drawn more and more to Wholefoods, come back Fairway!

  5. The setting is what sets this Fairway apart from all others. Grab a salad or sandwich from the "food court" and you can sit on the covered patio or outdoors and enjoy views of the Statue of Liberty and boats going by. Otherwise: it's a Fairway. Same confusing layout with 3 aisles of each product (organic, store brand and then all others) but a great selection of fruits, veggies, fish and meats and fresh roasted coffee. Lines can get crazy but the staff is generally friendly and helpful. I do think that Fairways prices have been going up for the past few years so it's not as much of a bargain as it used to be but it's still better then holier-then-thou Whole Foods. Plus their store brands are great quality and usually pretty reasonable.

  6. fairway continues to impress. carrying all sorts of hard to find items like british goods, odd spices, fresh seafood, and other things like tea leaves of all types, coffee beans from the four corners of the world. prices are high but its to be expected for the selection you get. produce isn't bad either but is on the pricy end of the spectrum. if you are around try the lobster roll in the food area towards the back of the store. pick a nice sunny day grab a lobster roll and a San Peligrino and head outside to their outdoor seating area by the NY Water Taxi. check out the water, see some sea gulls and enjoy life 🙂

  7. This is in my opinion the best and largest quality supermarkets In Brooklyn. (Better than shoprite and whole foods)

They have their own parking lot, so  parking is never a problem here.

Fairway has a few locations In the city, so whenever I was in the city (Manhattan) I would always stop by, especially the one on a 125st, but now that they opened one in Brooklyn I'm more of a regular here.

I love their selection of cheese and meats, huge selection of teas, and coffee. I always find here something interesting to try for the first time, from new kinds of snacks, to different types of beer.

It's always a fun shopping experience here.

Pro bonus: bring your camera and enjoy the sunset on the waterfront with one of the nicer views of the statue of liberty. There are two parks close by the pier 44 garden, or the Louis Valentino, Jr. Park and Pier.

  8. Fairway is the wet dream of supermarkets… Awesome butchers, fish monger and produce. Amazing craft beer selection… Check. The only downside is the horde of inconsiderate brooklynites that descend on the market every weekend. Newsflash dorks… There are other people trying to shop. Stop taking over the whole aisle while you decide which artisanal organic cereal you decide to feed your devil spawn.
