  1. Cheating is wrong, and those who are lazy pay the price.  It's New Year's Day, and Pan Con Todo is closed.  So is Rumba Cubana.  Noches de Colombia looks packed.  Yet our craving for pan con bistec must be satisfied, and who wants to cook on January 1st?  Yelp suggested "Latin America", and despite the place looking one-third full and forlorn, we walked in.  The good?  Probably, the music mixes they play.  Pan con bistec – chewey, dry, not seasoned or marinated, and way average.  Potatoes that came with it are your regular frozen fries, nothing like those thin, crispy, deliciously cooked potatoes from Pan con Todo.  Pink, mealy tomato did not make this sandwich any better.  The service was so slow, the people at the table next to ours walked out after waiting for their water (or a greeting) for 10 minutes.  After we finished our sad, sorry sandwiches, we had to wait another 15 minutes to get a check and then to get change.  This is what happens to lazy cheater.  Beware.

  2. While visiting family in New Jersey, I took them out for dinner and was assured this place would stand up to my grandmother's cooking…  It was pretty close, but my grandmother (of course) is still the best!  The food was tasty and the service friendly.  I ended my good meal with a dessert of Tres Leches.  It was phenomenal.  I will revisit this restaurant the next time I'm in Jersey!

  3. I used come here often with another coworker for lunch. Not only is the food cheap ($6 for lunch!), but it's delicious!  Portion size is ridiculous entree can often be shared for two people. My favorite: 1) the breaded chicken breast or 2) sauteed chicken in garlic sauce. Lunch specials come with a huge portion of white rice (or arroz moro) and platanos.

I definitely recommend Latin America if anyone is looking for a great Cuban place!

  4. Union City is home to the largest Cuban population in the U.S. outside Miami (and also to a plethora of South and Central Americans living in the area). That's pretty legit, so it's no wonder that walking up and down Bergenline will treat your tastebuds to a tantalizing collection of treats. Having grown up in the area, and having sampled a variety of different places, I've gotta stick with Latin American as my favorite food in the area.

The restaurant itself is unassuming without being divey. It won't win you any style points with the ladies, but it's clean and, more importantly, the food is delicious. Definitely try the lechon with arroz moro and yuca with garlic mojo sauce. The lechon comes out JUICY, unlike several Cuban restaurants I've tried in Manhattan. The yuca (cassava) is the perfect complement to the lechon.

The prices are ridiculously cheap when you factor that two people can easily split an entree ($10 lechon/rice/yuca for 2? yes please). They also have a bunch of other dishes (various steaks, meats, chicken) and you can't really go wrong any way you decide to order.

Plenty of street parking available in the vicinity. Quick, attentive service. Chicarron brought to your table on the weekends. 5 stars, 2 thumbs (and my cholesterol level) way up.

    Pros

    EXCELLENT food
    super cheap
    big portions (great value)

    Cons

My future wife will not like that this restaurant has spoiled me with their great food

  5. If you are looking for a great Spanish style breakfast then look no further then Union City. However if you are looking specifically for a Cuban style breakfast then Latin America Restaurant is the place to go.  I would recommend going there for breakfast all the time if you are craving a cafe con leche with a full hearty breakfast. My favorite meal is scrambled eggs mixed with ham and cheese. It is served with french fries and a delicious and toasty bread with butter. The staff is extremely pleasant and service is quick. You walk right in and pick where you want to sit and they are there in no time to take your drink order. Personally I've been going there for over five years where the waitress already knows my order and is always so happy to see my husband and I. Try this place if you haven't already!

    Buen provecho!

  6. For $6 you can get hefty portions of moist white rice, steaming black beans and saucy ropa vieja (pulled beef in tomato sauce, marinated with onions and peppers)….my favorite!

Not only is the food cheap, but it's delicious. They have an authentic Cuban flavor, not too greasy, and perfectly paired.

I come here pretty often, and although parking can be a bit of a hassle, it is completely worth the search. I recommend trying:

    1. the lechon (pulled pork, with extra mojo -garlic sauce)
    2. the roast chicken (a bit healthier)
    3. the Plato Ranchero (which includes short ribs and Spanish sausage, served sizzling on a metal platter)
    4. the empanadas de carne as an appetizer or the guava & cheese ones for desert

The waitstaff is very friendly, they are as warm as the complimentary Cuban bread that is served before the meal. haha. So if you are looking to end a diet with a bang, come scarf down some scrumptious Cuban food here. Try the sangria if you want to add alcoholism to to gluttony. 🙂

  7. Great food. Slow service but worth it if you're not in a rush. Sounds cliche, but try the Garlic Soup (Sopa de Ajo) and the Cuban Sandwich. Wash it all down with some Morir Soñando.
