Came here on a special lunch date. Ate the food before as leftover takeout but it was my first time eating at the restaurant. I had the Bife a Portuguesa. It was delicious. I love the crispy potatoes, the rice is flavorful, veggies are perfect and the steak has a delicious, savory garlic sauce. The serving is enough for two meals, which means you get to enjoy left overs the next day. The meal comes with a salad, looks pre made, nothing special about it. It also comes with fresh, crispy bread which was very good. We also had a pitcher of the sangria which was yummy and enough for SEVERAL glasses each. The restaurant itself needs some updating, some purging of old equipment and phone books lying around by the bathrooms, and a good cleaning in the bathroom hallway as there is a smell. The service however was excellent. Our waiter was friendly and attentive and always made sure our glasses were full and as soon as we were done with a plate the bus boy quickly took it away. We were there on a lazy Sunday afternoon so only about 5 tables were occupied. Over all nice restaurant with good food, just needs a little updating.
Zarzuela (a spicy mixed seafood soup) is awesome and a lot of food, you may have leftovers.. Authentic Portuguese cuisine, good service. (i have traveled around Portugal on a couple trips and speak Portuguese) Interior feels a bit old school. It is a big place. Was there on a cold night in February for some reason the dining area was a bit too cool but the bar area was nice and warm, if i return in cold weather I will dine at the bar unless that issue was temporary.
I've been wanting to eat at this restaurant since my friends always brag about it.
The decor surprised my husband, it definitely needs a makeover by the bar area and dining is outdated.
I overlooked that since the food was the main reason I was there.
Manny (bartender) was very friendly and funny. He took our order. We ordered clams casino and oyster Rockefeller. We received fresh crusted bread with butter. Bread was so fresh,we loved it. Our appetizers came out and the presentation was good. The oyster Rockefeller were fantastic! It's just how my husband likes it. My clams casino was delicious, I ate all of them.
Dinner was a Portuguese specialty- pork,sausages, potatoes, clams, carrots, cauliflower, and rich gravy served with a side of yellow rice. It was amazing!!!
We weren't able to finish it thank god we were sharing this plate is enough for two.
In the meantime, DJ was playing and the great music flooded the room. Customers finished eating in the dining room now moved into the lounge area. And the dancing began!! Had a great time!!
Yeah everything looks just as it did 25+ years ago but the food is still as good now as it was then. For starters, not only was the shrimp in garlic sauce yummy to the tummy but it was an extremely large portion too.
Our entrées were steak and paella and both were good dishes. Service was constant, consistent and attentive. Parking lot!
I am glad I rediscovered the Portuguese Manor.
This venue is amazing!!! First off this place is near and dear to me as it was the site of me being welcomed in the hearts and lives of my boyfriend family. As that is not enough to make it memorable, the delicious sangria with fresh fruit diced in it, the savory garlic chicken with rice and veggies or the exceptional service ought to do it. My water and wine glasses were never empty and though our party was on the larger side all of our requests were carried in a very timely manner. Be sure to come hungry as their portions are huge!!! Can't wait to stop by soon, it's been too long since I had some quality Portuguese food. Be sure to give them a visit.
I would say that any complaints I might have are tempered by the portions and the prices. The ambiance is unusual – fine stuccoed arches inside and a classy exterior, but with a worn mini-golf green in front that barely covers the sidewalk. I did not know what to expect, walking through the spacious interior with finely attired waitstaff and a nice bar. Then I get to our table in the back, pick up a menu – wait, all of these prices begin with a 1. Is that a typo?
Entire loaves of fresh, warm bread were piled on the table. No fancy remoulade, just butter packets. Wine came around in carafes, which I guess is fine, but a fancy restaurant would show the bottle. We all got salads, and I have no idea if that was paid for or part of the meal, because it wasn't on the menu. The only dressing choice was Russian (there was an oil and vinegar way down at the other end, I noticed later).
So far, I'm getting that iffy vibe from places that look really fancy and then deliver really cheap, unsatisfying food. Let me say right now, that is not the case here. Several different dishes were ordered, and I watched them come out. The filets mignon were done perfectly as ordered. Veal chops, pork chops, other dishes all came out to perfection. The yellow rice tasted like it came from a 500 lb vat, but it seemed fresh enough. (It was ever so slightly undercooked.) The "Portuguese potatoes" are notable. They look like potato chips, but not at all oily. You pick one up and realize that it's not crispy/fried. In fact, most of them are soft in the center. I wrapped a few of my camaraos (shrimp) inside. I do not like potato chips, but I have to admit these were surprisingly good. The food overall was quite good, not exceptional, not bad, as others have noted it was almost more southern Italian than Portuguese, but I do say "almost." To finish, desserts are in a refrigerated display case, and ice cream dishes are in a freezer display.
Such a mixed message here. I can't quite give 5 stars to the place, but for once, the dischord between downscale and upscale really doesn't matter to me. I feel like I could eat here whenever I want, but feel classy doing so. I would imagine the food is always up to the same standards, as well as the service.
Summary: 5 star service, 4 star ambiance, 3 star food, 2 star price (where 1 is cheapest). (Okay, the food is 3.5 stars, but I had to make that progression.) Well done.
I purchased a Groupon for Portuguese Manor and was excited to try it out based on the good reviews. My boyfriend and I headed over on a Friday evening around 7:30. There was complimentary valet parking in the small lot next to the restaurant. When I entered the restaurant, I noted that it was musty smelling and old looking when walking through the bar. The dining area was pretty busy but I was seated after standing there for only a few minutes.
We started off with the stuffed mushrooms and garlic shrimp as appetizers. They were both pretty good and my boyfriend really liked the roasted garlic on top of the shrimp. We noticed right away that there was only one waiter and multiple bus boys, and the waiter told me to "hold on" on multiple occasions when I called him over. Because of this, we were there for over 2 hours as it took a while to put our main order in.
For entrees, my boyfriend ordered the fried seafood platter and I ordered the garlic chicken. I'm not the pickiest eater in the world and have been to at least a dozen Portuguese restaurants in a 25 mile radius and garlic chicken is a pretty basic staple of the menu. However, my dinner consisted of very tough chicken covered in soy sauce. After a few bites, I decided that it wasn't even worth finishing and I lost my appetite. My boyfriend seemed to enjoy his food. I wasn't able to complain to the waiter about the food due to the extended amount of time that the waiter was out of sight and I didn't feel like waiting for even more time for a second meal to be prepared.
As if the slow service and poor food weren't enough, there was an issue with the Groupon which was the icing on the cake. Basically, the waiter wasn't able to scan the Groupon on the mobile app and even though I told him he could jot down my Groupon's number, he insisted that I call Groupon. Because, ya know, Groupon is open at 9:30 at night. Finally we were able to figure out the technical issue but it still left a bad taste in my month since I already couldn't wait to get out of there.
I have been going to the Portuguese Manor for the last 10 plus years. This place is amazing. The food, service and the environment is GREAT. You get a delicious meal for a very fair price. The decor gives an impression of being in small taverna in Portugal.
