  1. The review is based on "dinner" experience only. I was here last night with coworker after we went shopping at Bloomingdale's. I saw the great review on yelp so I thought I'd give it a try, a bit disappointed to be honest . Food was over priced and I didn't see the value of it . Coworker ordered shabu shabu ($32 )but it was very mediocre, the portion is small and they have very little meats. I honestly think it is over-priced.

I ordered shashimi A La Carte ($26 ) and it was also just a OK.  It is also small portion and the sashimi they served are just very basic and standard sashimi. The A La Carte we ordered just came with white rice only.
I read again all of the great reviews on yelp again today and I just realized all of the compliments and good reviews are all from their lunch specials.

I don't think I will come back again for dinner, but I would definitely try here again for lunch.

  2. My review is solely based on the lunch special deal.

Their lunch specials are great! Even though there's only 3 choices, for the price you pay it is SO worth it. They give you a little tray, which consists of the main dish, soy sauce, 2 shrimp tempuras, 1 broccoli tempura, tempura dipping sauce, miso soup, and steamed egg. I'm not positive as to what the other two lunch special choices are, but I got the salmon sashimi choice and MM IT WAS DELICIOUS. The salmon tasted so fresh and they gave a generous amount, with rice on the bottom. Miso soup is always good and the steamed egg was also really tasty. I've tried some steamed eggs that are bland but this one was seasoned very well. All this deliciousness for only $12.50, which is a great deal to me. Highly recommend coming here for lunch!

  3. My coworker suggested this place so we decided to try to get there early since she told us it's always packed. We arrived 15 mins early to its 12pm opening time and sure enough there were already 3 other people waiting outside the restaurant. Within a few minutes there were several groups of people waiting behind us. They opened the doors at exactly 12pm and they were able to seat our party of 5 ( I feel like any larger, they wouldn't be able to accommodate because last time we tried to come with 9 ppl and they said they'd have to split us up).

There are 3 lunch specials which are all $13.50 each so the prices have slowly gone up. Still, I think this is a very affordable price for the amount of food you get and the great quality. I ordered the Sanmizen Lunch Special which comes with 4 sashimi slices: 2 salmon, 1 tuna, 1 fluke. Let me tell you, this sashimi was amazing! It just melts in your mouth!! It's so fresh and absolutely delicious! We basically ate in silence for a good chunk of the time.

The shrimp tempura that you get is also freshly deep fried with a crispy exterior and tender interior. I like how they give you just enough rice in two bowls: one with the shrimp tempura and one with the sashimi.

As for the soba noodles, I was eating it and then halfway through I felt as if I was a fire-breathing dragon and I could feel my nostrils burning and my eyes tearing. Sure enough, I had eaten the entire wasabi chunk! It camouflages with the seaweed so be careful of it if you can't eat spicy foods!! My coworkers got a laugh out of it -_-

The steamed egg custard was okay but a little on the watery side. I wasn't fond of the overpowering mushroom flavor either. The miso soup was also too salty so I wasn't able to finish it. Other than that, everything else was so delicious. We certainly will come back again. Just remember to get there early!

  4. Wajima Japanese Restaurant's lunch special is one of the best kept secrets in NYC.

I love their Sanimizen. For $12.50, this lunch set resembles a mini Japanese buffet with a mini bowl of chirashi over rice, a mini bowl of shrimp tempura over rice, a bowl of cold soba, steamed egg, and miso soup. DID I MENTION THAT THIS IS ONLY $12.50?!!

Seriously, if you don't work around this area, come here on your day off because not only is it cheap (considering the neighborhood), it's good quality too. I've also had the Noodle & Niku Tofu lunch set, which is soba with beef and deep fried tofu, but it's nothing special.

    Stick with the Sanimizen!

  5. This restaurant is legit. I mean, authentic sushi, sashimi… Everything. Which easily means that it's going to be pricey. Entrees go for 27-35 dollars. You can get rolls separate for 6-8 dollars and you can get them inside out for 50 cents more per roll. 1 roll is 6 pcs and each roll has really small pcs (like what you'd expect of authentic sushi). Their sashimi is also very very good. The salmon and tuna melted in my mouth despite it being cut a little too thickly but everything was really fresh and good!!

  6. Very fresh sashimi and delightful desserts. Has a great, casual and relaxing vibe so it is perfect for a date or if you want to be able to hear your partner without shouting across the hall. They have a decent selection of sake that is reasonably priced as well. Service was above average and very friendly.

  7. Agedashi tofu – amazing.

Sashimi dinner entree – Decent. The sashimi was quite cold, which was a bit off-putting, but otherwise decent. Also ordered a piece of uni, which did not taste particularly fresh.

Weekday lunch special – AMAZING. For $11-$13, you can get really good lunch trays/bento boxes, which include tempura, sashimi, a REALLY good cold udon soup, and some other things. Def recommend getting the one with the cold udon. It was fabulous.

  8. This place was alright. I say we should temper our expectations when frequenting sushi places in nyc because they often have inflated reviews on yelp.

First off. It is much better than your run of the mill sushi place. I give a single star to your average sushi place in the suburbs, you know the kind with all you can eat sushi.

This place is a solid three because that's what it is for its price point. I think there are other similarly priced sushi joints in Manhattan that are better. Etcetc.

Lunch specials are a good deal and the tempura was on point. I would say that if I were on the east side again (the horror), and was craving sushi I may come back.

    Their tea was also nice.
